Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Bola Tinubu during Vice President Kashim Shettima’s administration, has advised the president against pursuing a second term in office.
Baba-Ahmed suggested that Tinubu should instead endorse a younger candidate for the presidency in 2027.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he encouraged Tinubu to utilize his remaining two years in office to address Nigeria’s challenges and mentor a younger successor.
He stated, “If I had the opportunity to speak with President Tinubu, I would advise him not to run in 2027 and to support a younger candidate.
“There are more impactful ways he could spend his time than continuing as president. He could focus on completing the tasks he has yet to accomplish or enhancing his previous efforts.
“As I mentioned in my letter, seek out a younger individual who embodies energy, health, focus, and a strong commitment to the future of our country.
“Within your party, identify those who genuinely understand the struggles Nigeria faces today—individuals who have children growing up and are concerned about their future over the next 20 years.
“There are many patriotic and passionate Nigerians eager to contribute to the nation’s future. Empower them, as you have already played your part. There’s no need for you to run again.
“Use the next two years to address Nigeria’s challenges—work on improving the economy and enhancing security.”
