Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his unwillingness to leave the party, labeling it as cowardly.
In an interview with reporters in Awka on Thursday, Nwobu expressed that it is illogical for Wike to claim PDP membership while openly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He argued that Wike lacks the bravery to officially defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite his visible support for the Tinubu government.
“If Wike had the courage, he would go and get an APC membership card. I believe he is a coward for insisting he is still a PDP member while backing President Tinubu. What kind of contradiction is that?”
He further noted that during Wike’s time as governor, he held excessive sway over the PDP, effectively acting as the party’s alter ego and determining who filled key roles.
“At that time, Wike presented his actions as beneficial to the party, but it has become evident that he had hidden agendas. He strategically placed loyalists throughout the party, especially within the National Working Committee (NWC). While he claimed to be safeguarding the party’s interests, he was actually setting the stage for his own political ambitions,” Nwobu explained.
He also mentioned that Wike’s ongoing influence complicates the party’s ability to discipline him, as many of his loyalists continue to hold important positions and serve as a protective barrier.
“While he was feigning support for the party, he was actually solidifying his own power. Most of the former NWC members owe their roles to him, from the national chairman to the secretary. Even now, he maintains their loyalty through financial incentives.”
He pointed out that efforts to regain control of the party from Wike have already started.
“We’ve already addressed the situation with the national secretary, and he is no longer in position. Others will follow suit. The national secretary role is vital for any party, and eliminating his loyalists from these key positions will help restore integrity to the PDP,” he stated.
