Federal Government launches plan for standardised websites across public institutions

The Federal Government has initiated a process to implement standardised websites for all national and public institutions, aiming to improve trust, accessibility, and digital consistency in government communication.

The move was announced during the April edition of the DevsInGov forum in Abuja, organised by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

Special Adviser on Digital Transformation, Nafisa Isah, who led the project, explained that the initiative, dubbed the Nigerian Web Design Standards Project. is a collaborative effort between the ministry and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The objective, she said, is to develop uniform design principles, frameworks, and user-friendly guidelines for all government websites.

“The goal is to ensure consistency in structure, usability, and appearance across all public-sector websites. This helps improve user experience, trust, and the digital identity of government platforms,” Isah stated.

Stakeholder working groups were assembled to co-create and recommend essential features for the new design standards. These proposals are now awaiting approval by relevant authorities.

Speaking at the event, NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Abdullahi, represented by Mr Saliu AbdulKareem, emphasised that the websites would feature clearly identifiable national symbols, including the Nigerian flag colours, ministry logos, and the coat of arms.

“These websites will not only appear recognisably Nigerian, but they’ll also reinforce authenticity. With a unified design, users will be able to confidently identify official platforms,” AbdulKareem explained.

He added that the project would adopt a bottom-up approach, ensuring that standardisation applies not just at the federal level but also across local and sub-national entities.

He noted that uniformity in government web design will aid public understanding, improve service delivery, and contribute to Nigeria’s broader digital transformation efforts.
