President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria, assuring political leaders that these principles will remain central to his government.
The President made the statement on Wednesday during an interfaith breaking of the fast with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s unity and stability depend on good governance and strong democratic institutions, stressing that his administration will continue to safeguard these values.
He also emphasised the importance of internal democracy within political parties, noting that credible electoral systems depend largely on transparent party processes. According to him, direct primaries provide members with greater opportunities to participate in choosing candidates for public office.
The President described himself as a committed democrat who had been involved in Nigeria’s democratic struggle for decades. He recalled the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists during the military era, including protests, detentions, and exile.
Tinubu stressed that under his leadership, democracy would continue to thrive and that the rule of law would remain a guiding principle.
He also assured political stakeholders of his commitment to conducting free and fair elections in the country.
Earlier, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the President for his leadership and management of the country’s diverse population and resources. He also thanked Tinubu for inviting leaders of the ruling party and other political parties to the Ramadan breaking of the fast.
Yilwatda pledged the APC’s support for the President’s vision for the country.
Meanwhile, IPAC Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, appealed to the President to reconsider the inclusion of the National Identity Number (NIN) as a requirement for voter registration, warning that it could disenfranchise many eligible voters.
He also called for the restoration of financial support from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to political parties.
Dantalle further informed the President about a documentary titled “Unbroken Democracy,” produced to mark 26 years of democratic rule in Nigeria. The film, supported by Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, is expected to premiere soon at the State House.
