In Nigerian politics, real electoral strength is rarely built in the halls of power alone. It is often shaped at the grassroots level—within wards, polling units, neighbourhood meetings, and local communities. This reality was evident on March 11, 2026, when the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uvwie Local Government Area held the inauguration of its party executives and Ward Chairmen. While the event may appear routine, it represents a crucial step in strengthening the party’s grassroots structure and preparing for future political contests in Delta State.
The APC Secretariat along Effurun–Sapele Road in Uvwie became a hub of political activity as party leaders, members, and newly elected officials gathered for the swearing-in ceremony. The atmosphere reflected renewed commitment and unity among party members. Barrister David Esiekpe, the APC State Legal Adviser II, accompanied by Comrade Lucky Oghenegweke, administered the oath of office, formally legitimizing the leadership structure and reinforcing the party’s internal democratic processes.

Following the inauguration, the Local Government Area Chairman, Comrade Sylvester Oghenewede, directed the newly sworn-in Ward Chairmen to hold a private consultation. This strategic move allowed the leaders to deliberate and build internal consensus. From this process emerged Comrade Peter Odafe Egere, Chairman of Ward 1, as the Chairman of all Ward Chairmen. He will work alongside Ward 4 Chairman, Sunny Duruvwe, who emerged as Secretary, and Ward 5 Chairman, Sunny Okeke, with Lucky Evumefefe serving as Treasurer. Their emergence through consensus reflects the party’s effort to maintain unity and balance within its leadership structure.
The event also reflected broader political developments in Delta State, particularly as the APC continues to expand its influence through political realignments and the integration of leaders from various political backgrounds. The presence of prominent political figures underscored the significance of the occasion. Among them was Rt. Hon. (Princess) Barr. Evelyn Omavowan Oboro, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, whose attendance highlighted the importance of grassroots organization in shaping the party’s electoral success.
Addressing the newly inaugurated leaders, Comrade Sylvester Oghenewede emphasized the importance of service-oriented leadership. He urged them to view their positions as opportunities to serve the people and strengthen party unity rather than as positions of authority. He also encouraged continuous consultation among ward leaders and executives to maintain the cohesion built by previous leadership.
One of the key outcomes of the event was the directive that Ward Executives should be inaugurated by March 18, 2026. This timeline reflects the party’s determination to complete its grassroots structure promptly and begin early preparations for future elections. With the ward structures fully operational, the party aims to strengthen community engagement and mobilization across the local government area.
A solemn moment was also observed in honour of the late Comrade Christian Ujara, former Ward 9 Chairman who later served as Secretary before his passing. The tribute acknowledged his contributions to the party and served as a reminder of the dedication of those who have helped build the APC in Uvwie.
The gathering also highlighted the strong political experience within the party. Leaders such as Comrade Wilfred Ileleji, the immediate past LGA Chairman and current Senior Special Assistant on Political Affairs to the Delta State Governor, Hon. Stella Daboner, former Chairperson of Uvwie Local Government Council, Arch. Victor Geteloma, Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Governor, Elder Sarah Uwaye, and Rt. Hon. Rire Okejera Uruesheyi, leader of the Uvwie legislative arm, were present. Their collective experience represents a significant asset for the party’s growth and strategic planning.
As the event concluded, it was clear that the March 11 inauguration was more than a ceremonial gathering. It marked the beginning of a renewed phase of political organization within the APC in Uvwie. By strengthening its leadership structure, fostering unity, and preparing its grassroots network, the party has positioned itself for greater political engagement in Delta State.
March 11, 2026 will therefore be remembered as an important moment in the consolidation of APC’s grassroots leadership in Uvwie—a foundation upon which future political successes may be built.
