The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has extended its congratulations to journalists in the state on this year’s World Press Freedom Day.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, and the Secretary, Comrade O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Union acknowledged the significance of this year’s theme, “Freedom of Expression in the face of the AI revolution,” which it described as both timely and relevant, especially amid growing concerns regarding the role of artificial intelligence in various sectors of society.
The Union urged its members to adapt to technological innovations that can enhance their professional practices, while also cautioning against the potential pitfalls of AI. It recognised the transformative impact that AI has had on journalism but also pointed out that it has contributed to the spread of misinformation and biases.
While celebrating World Press Freedom Day, the Ekiti NUJ encouraged journalists to embrace the positive potential of artificial intelligence, but reminded them that the ethics of journalism must remain a guiding principle.
“We extend our congratulations to our members in Ekiti State and to our colleagues worldwide on this year’s World Press Freedom Day. The theme is particularly relevant, as there have been growing debates about the role of Artificial Intelligence in media.
“We urge our members to leverage the positive potential of AI, but always with the understanding that journalistic ethics must not be compromised. Once we abandon these ethics, we risk losing the profession altogether,” the Union stated.
