Ochanya Lamai, a lecturer in the Mass Communication Department of Nasarawa State University, has sparked widespread reactions after videos of her dancing and participating in popular TikTok trends with students went viral.
Operating under the username @ochanyalamai, she has attracted over 19,700 followers on the platform. Her content, which often captures the lighter side of campus life, has become a source of amusement for many.
Lamai refers to herself as “Mummy Gen-Z” and describes her roles as content creator, music lover, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and academic. Her dynamic online presence and open interactions with students have drawn both praise and criticism.
While many commend her for breaking stereotypes about Nigerian lecturers and bringing joy to the social media space, others have taken issue with her perceived departure from the norms of academic professionalism.
Despite the mixed reactions, Lamai has continued to enjoy widespread support from TikTok users who appreciate her lively personality and creative use of social media to inform, educate, and entertain.
In one clip, she responded playfully to critics questioning her involvement in content creation by lip-syncing to Afrobeat artist Ruger’s track Giveaway. With lines like, “I dey burst my own brain, still impressed with myself. You cannot shame the shameless,” Lamai appeared unbothered and confident in her choices.
Her frequent collaborations with students in videos have only deepened public interest. For many, her friendliness feels unusual for someone in her position, yet her approachable nature has made her a standout figure online.
Social media users have shared diverse opinions. TikTok user Boyce Iyamah commented disapprovingly on a video discussing student project topics, saying, “I am a lecturer too, but you are painting the wrong picture.”
In contrast, @stone__xxl said, “I wish I was in this school and this department. To graduate no go even sweet me.”
Another user, Tonia_ify, remarked, “I think this woman is the only female lecturer in Nigeria that is happy to be a lecturer. Others I’ve seen are always frowning or seem angry.”
TikTok user Young Lyf simply added, “This is social media lecturer, nawa ooo.”
