40-Foot Truck Crushes Minibus in Lagos, Kills Driver – LASTMA Rescues Three Victims
A tragic road accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, Lagos, resulting in the death of a commercial minibus driver and serious traffic disruptions in the area.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash involved a 40-foot container-laden Mack truck with registration number MUS 729 XY, which reportedly suffered a brake failure and overturned, crushing a commercial minibus, popularly known as “Korope.”
The impact led to the immediate death of the minibus driver. However, three passengers — two women and one man — were rescued unhurt by LASTMA officers and were quickly handed over to emergency medical responders for further evaluation.
The accident caused massive gridlock on the busy arterial road, with traffic spilling into nearby routes, including Shofunde and Olufunlayo streets. LASTMA operatives were on ground to manage the situation, implementing emergency traffic diversion strategies to ease congestion.
In a statement, LASTMA confirmed that the truck driver attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended and handed over to security operatives from the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions.
Emergency teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police joined LASTMA officers at the scene to secure the area, evacuate the body of the deceased, and clear the wreckage to restore normalcy.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the victim's family. He called on truck operators to prioritize vehicle maintenance and strictly comply with safety protocols.
“Truck operators must ensure their vehicles, particularly the braking systems, are in perfect condition before hitting the road. Incidents like this are preventable and highlight the importance of mechanical diligence,” Giwa stated.
He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to road safety enforcement, emergency preparedness, and ensuring only roadworthy vehicles operate within the state.
