The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays in observance of the Muslim festival Eid el-Kabir, also known as Sallah
.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Magdalene Ajani.
In the statement, Mr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm greetings to Muslims both in Nigeria and around the world, encouraging them to emulate the virtues of sacrifice, faith, and obedience as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon Him).
He urged Muslims to use the occasion to pray for peace and prosperity in Nigeria, highlighting that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to reforms that benefit all citizens.
“The people-oriented reforms and initiatives carried out, in furtherance of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s Administration, is to restore Nigeria on the path of progress,” the statement read.
The Minister also called on all Nigerians, regardless of religious background, to support the government in its quest to restore the nation’s image and foster unity.
Eid-ul-Adha is one of Islam’s two major annual festivals, the other being Eid-ul-Fitr. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Isma’il, as a demonstration of obedience to God.
The celebration falls on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This year, the holiday runs from June 6 to 8, with festivities expected to continue through the weekend.
