The Lagos State Government has received three brand-new electric train sets to boost operations on the Blue Line Rail, marking a major step forward in its urban transportation agenda.
Each of the newly arrived train sets consists of four coaches, making a total of 12 coaches now added to the Blue Line fleet. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development on Thursday via his official X account, stating that the arrival will significantly reduce commuter wait times and improve the overall travel experience.
He wrote, “I’m happy to share that we have taken delivery of three brand-new train sets of 12 coaches in total for the Lagos Blue Line Rail, this means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone using the Blue Line.”
A video posted alongside the announcement showed cranes unloading the train coaches at the port, preparing them for transfer to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) facilities.
This delivery follows LAMATA’s January 2025 update confirming that six train sets for the Blue and Red Lines had passed factory acceptance tests in China and were being prepared for shipment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also noted that the extension of the Blue Line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko remains on track for completion by 2026.
“We are optimistic this expansion will further ease daily commutes and we thank Lagosians for their continued patience,” he said.
The Blue Line Rail, a 27-kilometre electric metro system developed in phases, commenced operations in September 2023. As of December 2024, it had recorded over 2.37 million passenger trips.
Construction of Phase 2, which includes six additional stations and key infrastructure like the new Mazamaza, Satellite, and LASU Bridges, is currently around 27% complete.
