President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a goodwill message to Nigeria’s Super Falcons as they prepare to face host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
Commending the team’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament, Tinubu said the players have already made the country proud through their courage, discipline, and sportsmanship. He highlighted the team’s unbeaten run in the group stage, their knockout round victories, and their solid defensive record, conceding just one goal en route to the final.
The president particularly praised the Falcons’ display of compassion following their visit to injured South African player Gabriela Salgado after their semi-final clash, calling it a true reflection of African solidarity and empathy.
“If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” Tinubu said in his message, referencing the Falcons’ dominance and their record of winning all nine previous WAFCON finals they’ve played.
To demonstrate the government’s full support, Tinubu has dispatched a high-level delegation to attend the final in Rabat. The delegation includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko.
The president also acknowledged the families of the players, coaching crew, Nigerian supporters in Morocco, and the country’s diplomatic mission for their unwavering support during the competition.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bring home a record tenth continental title and assured them of a hero’s welcome in Abuja.
“You will finish strong by the grace of God. Go for the tenth. Bring the trophy home,” he said.
