Nigeria Launches Ambitious Bid to Host Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria - July 22, 2025 - Nigeria is set to make history as it launches a bid to host the prestigious Formula 1 Grand Prix in its capital city, Abuja. Led by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, this ambitious initiative seeks to put Nigeria on the global motorsport map.

The NSC has partnered with Opus Racing Promotions, supported by government relations experts BL Practice, to drive this groundbreaking bid. This strategic move underscores Nigeria's growing global aspirations and its commitment to showcasing its capabilities to the world.

“We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria—not just as a sporting event, but as a strategic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, and economic growth,” said Dikko. “This aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), which aims to reset, refocus, and relaunch the sector as a significant contributor to national development.”

As part of the bid, formal invitations have been extended to key global figures in motorsport, including Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, and German firm Tilke Engineers & Architects, renowned for designing world-class racing circuits. Their visits will enable direct engagement with Nigerian government officials and private sector stakeholders, and allow them to assess the viability and potential impact of hosting a Grand Prix in Abuja.

Nigeria’s proposal highlights the country’s economic strength, strategic geographic location, and expanding infrastructure. The nation, Africa’s largest economy, is positioning the Abuja Grand Prix as more than a race—it is envisioned as a catalyst for foreign investment, job creation, global tourism, and national unity.

A successful bid would mark a historic return of Formula 1 to the African continent, which last hosted a Grand Prix in South Africa in 1993. The Abuja Grand Prix would not only boost Nigeria’s international image but also create a legacy of innovation, youth empowerment, and sports-driven development.

As the nation awaits a response from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the excitement surrounding the Abuja bid continues to build. Should the proposal be approved, it will mark a transformative moment for Nigerian sports and position the country as a new powerhouse in global motorsports.
