Former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of worsening economic hardship, claiming that Nigerians are dying daily due to starvation rather than illness.
Amaechi made the remarks on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while addressing supporters and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) shortly after arriving from Abuja. The visit marks his first appearance in the state since joining the ADC-led opposition coalition formed three weeks ago.
Hundreds of supporters from both the ADC and the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, to welcome the former governor. His convoy later stopped at several key junctions in the city, including the popular Garrison Junction, where he greeted cheering crowds.
“Currently, Nigerians are complaining about President Tinubu’s first tenure. Imagine what a second tenure will look like—you will get dead and buried,” Amaechi said. “People are dying every day, not because of sickness, but because of starvation. I am looking for people who will join me to confront them.”
Amaechi, who also previously served as governor of Rivers State, urged ADC members to begin grassroots mobilization across local government areas and wards ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stressed that the party must position itself as a viable alternative to the current leadership.
He also decried electoral malpractice in Rivers State, particularly the manipulation of election results, and vowed that the new coalition under ADC would confront and put an end to such practices.
“Our state is notorious for writing results. They make noise after writing results. We must stop them,” he said. “When people believe the results are already written, it discourages voter turnout. We must encourage voters to come out and vote for change.”
Amaechi urged his supporters to immediately begin mobilizing at the community level, as directed by the ADC’s National Working Committee.
“Go home now and start mobilising, because these are the people who are going to vote,” he said.
