Lawmakers in the Ogun State House of Assembly have pressed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to intensify its monitoring and supervision of ongoing and completed road projects, stressing that the state’s heavy spending on infrastructure must translate into tangible benefits for residents.
The House Committee on Works and Infrastructure raised the demand during the ongoing mid-year budget performance review at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Committee chairman Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju voiced concerns about the durability and quality of several roads being executed by contractors, urging the Ministry to step up scrutiny during construction and after project delivery.
Legislators directed the Ministry to ensure all awarded projects meet approved specifications and deliver long-term socio-economic value to host communities. They also requested a comprehensive inventory of completed and active road projects to bolster legislative oversight and reinforce transparency.
The committee further called for urgent attention to the long-neglected Abeokuta–Abule Egba Road, asking the Ministry to prioritise its reconstruction in the next phase of works.
While raising concerns, lawmakers acknowledged improvements in the Ministry’s documentation of road interventions in the latest mid-year report.
Other committee members, including Hon. Musefiu Lamidi, Hon. Babatunde Tella, Minority Leader Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Hon. Dickson Awolaja and Hon. Adebisi Oyedele, joined calls for the timely completion of road projects within their constituencies.
Hon. Wahab Haruna additionally sought the extension of road infrastructure to his district, stressing that equitable distribution of development remains central to inclusive governance.
Responding, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Yusuf Lateef Oladimeji, representing the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Adesanya, reported that several key projects had been completed and were already driving economic activity.
He mentioned the newly inaugurated Oke Erinja–Ilobi Road in Yewa South, Awokoya Road, and Igbeba–Talbort–Yidi Lane in Ijebu Ode. Roads awaiting commissioning include Toyin–Giwa Hercules Road in Ifo, along with the Alagbole–Ajuwon and Akute–Ajuwon corridors. Oladimeji assured legislators that ongoing projects would gain momentum once the rainy season subsides.
He added that palliative repairs were under way on critical road networks to ease access, reduce vehicle damage and improve road safety.
The Ogun State Public Works Agency (OGPWA) and Bureau of Electrical Engineering Services (BEES) also appeared before the Assembly for their mid-year budget reviews as part of efforts to ensure accountability and efficiency across all ministries and agencies.
