The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Ministry of Education, in partnership with Core International, have introduced the Nigerian Capital Market Secondary Schools Quiz Competition to deepen financial literacy among secondary school students.
Managing Director of Financial Markets Indaba, Mr Patrick Muzundo, a sister organisation of Core International, announced the initiative in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
Muzundo explained that the youth-focused competition would feature 370 schools nationwide in a three-tier structure comprising state-level preliminaries, zonal semi-finals and a national grand finale.
“The quiz will run for six months, beginning in September, and will involve 370 schools, ten from each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),” he said.
Hosted on the Financial Markets Indaba platform, the competition is designed to give participants practical financial knowledge, laying the groundwork for informed decision-making while promoting academic excellence, teamwork and inclusivity.
Muzundo revealed that students would gain access to a virtual trading platform that mirrors real-time trading on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), providing hands-on experience of capital markets.
To ensure effective preparation, teachers will attend specialised training workshops, aimed at supporting students and embedding financial literacy more deeply into the school curriculum.
He added that the competition’s theme, ‘Empowering Future Investors through Knowledge’, aligns with SEC’s mandate to protect investors and advance market development by nurturing a financially informed generation.
“It also seeks to equip young Nigerians with the skills and understanding required to navigate capital markets and make sound financial choices,” Muzundo stated.
