The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured Tanzania’s official backing for its candidacy into Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, a key step in the country’s efforts to strengthen its voice in global maritime policy.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, made the disclosure in a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr Bolaji Akinola.
Oyetola described the endorsement as a significant diplomatic gain, pointing to longstanding bilateral cooperation and Nigeria’s previous support for Tanzania’s own IMO Council aspirations.
The announcement followed a courtesy visit by the Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Selestine Gervas Kakele, who reaffirmed his country’s intention to deepen maritime relations with Nigeria. He noted that both nations share common objectives in maritime development and continental representation.
Kakele said the decision to support Nigeria was based on mutual respect and historical goodwill. “It also reflects a shared vision for strengthening Africa’s maritime voice globally,” he remarked.
He also indicated that Tanzania plans to send a delegation of maritime professionals to understudy Nigeria’s marine and blue economy institutions, with a view to adopting similar strategies back home.
Responding, Oyetola expressed appreciation for Tanzania’s endorsement, describing it as a move that will not only serve Nigeria’s interests but also amplify Africa’s presence in international maritime governance. “A seat for Nigeria at the IMO Council represents a voice for Africa. It allows us to push for safer shipping, sustainable ocean resources, and fairer maritime trade practices continent-wide,” he said.
He pointed to Nigeria’s extensive coastline, active ports, and evolving maritime policies as evidence of its readiness to represent African interests effectively at the global stage.
The minister also referenced current initiatives under his ministry, including plans to revive a national shipping line through a public-private partnership. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fostering intra-African maritime trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He welcomed the proposed Tanzanian expert delegation and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation in facilitating meaningful collaboration. Oyetola also invited Tanzanian investors to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s growing marine and blue economy sector.
