Alexander Isak has accused Newcastle United of breaking promises and misleading fans as uncertainty grows over his future at the club.
In a strongly worded statement on social media, the 25-year-old striker confirmed he had long informed Newcastle of his desire to leave, insisting that “trust has been lost” between both parties.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,” Isak wrote. “Change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
The Sweden international, who was included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season, is reportedly the subject of a £110 million bid from Liverpool. Despite the recognition, Isak opted not to attend the PFA awards ceremony, citing ongoing disputes about his future.
He expressed frustration at what he described as the club’s misleading narrative, claiming his stance had been clear for a long time. “The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. Acting as if these issues have only just emerged is misleading,” he said.
Newcastle, however, denied making any commitment that would allow Isak to leave this summer. In a counter statement, the club stressed that while it values its players’ wishes, the conditions for a sale have not been met.
“Alex remains under contract. We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes. Our priority is always the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters,” the club said.
Isak missed Newcastle’s opening-day stalemate with Aston Villa and is unlikely to feature when Eddie Howe’s side face defending champions Liverpool on Monday — the very club pushing hardest for his signature.
