President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named retired Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.
This was announced in a statement issued on Thursday, 1 August 2025, by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, AVM Kaita succeeds Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who also holds the position of Chairman of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). The change, the Presidency noted, is intended to allow Dr Gawuna to concentrate on his role at the FHA, where he is actively involved in the administration’s national housing reform agenda.
The statement reads in part: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd.) as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.
“AVM Kaita replaces Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who also serves as Chairman of the Federal Housing Authority.”
Before his retirement from the Nigerian Air Force, AVM Kaita served as Director of Strategy at the Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Transformation and Innovation.
The statement noted that AVM Kaita is held in high regard for his contributions to military training, standardisation, and innovation, qualities the Presidency described as critical for steering the leadership of one of Nigeria’s foremost academic institutions.
