Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that combating corruption in Nigeria is not as complicated as widely believed.
Speaking during a youth-focused talk show with students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Obi argued that leading by example could cut corruption significantly.
“If you, your wife, and children are not stealing, you have already reduced corruption by 60 per cent,” he stated.
Obi highlighted his personal track record in public service, challenging anyone to link him to any financial misconduct during his tenure as Anambra State governor or as a bank chairman.
“I served as a bank chairman at a time when it was common for directors to grant themselves loans. Go and verify — I never took a loan from any bank where I was a director. The same applies to my eight years as governor,” he said.
Obi also pledged that if elected president in 2027, he would serve only one term of four years.
“There’s so much you can do in four years. You can bring civility, enforce laws, and set a tone for good governance,” he said.
Obi’s comments underscore his continued push for accountability and ethical leadership, especially among Nigeria’s youth.
