Fuel consumption drops 16% to 1.44bn litres — NMDPRA

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported a marked drop in fuel consumption for June 2025, with total fuel evacuation falling to 1.44 billion litres.

Director of Public Affairs, George Ene-Ita, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that daily fuel consumption averaged 48 million litres, correcting earlier figures that had suggested a lower rate of 38.94 million litres.

He explained that the June total stood at precisely 1,440,768,129 litres, reflecting a 16.42 per cent decline compared to May’s 1,768,812,804 litres—a shortfall of over 290 million litres. According to him, the daily average of 48,025,604 litres was calculated by dividing the total monthly volume by the 30 days under review.

The report revealed mixed trends across petroleum products. Supply of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), or diesel, increased slightly by 1.73 per cent to 432.18 million litres in June from 424.83 million litres in May. However, diesel distribution fell sharply by 23.23 per cent, from 552.35 million litres to 424.06 million litres within the same period.

Household Kerosene (HHK) supply and distribution both recorded a 13 per cent drop, sliding to 7.79 million litres from almost nine million litres in May. Automotive gasoline experienced the most severe decline in supply, plunging by nearly 48 per cent from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June, while its distribution fell by 16.54 per cent.

State-by-state truck-out volumes showed Lagos receiving the highest allocation with 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun with 88.69 million litres, the Federal Capital Territory with 77.51 million litres, and Oyo with 72.81 million litres.

The sharp overall reduction in supply and distribution, the report noted, underscores persistent challenges within the petroleum midstream and downstream sectors, which continue to affect fuel consumption patterns nationwide.

NMDPRA has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to bolster distribution networks and safeguard uninterrupted petroleum product supply across the country.
