Investors on the Nigerian Stock Exchange traded 8.736 billion shares worth N134.577 billion in 180,290 transactions during the week under review, reflecting a significant rise in volume compared to the 4.847 billion shares valued at N149.755 billion exchanged in 174,267 deals the previous week.
Despite the surge in activity, the total value of transactions fell by 11.3 per cent week-on-week.
The Financial Services Industry dominated the trading chart, recording 7.483 billion shares worth N70.980 billion across 77,227 deals, representing 85.65 per cent of the total equity turnover volume and 52.74 per cent of its value.
The Agriculture Industry ranked second with 201.906 million shares worth N7.863 billion in 11,450 transactions, followed by the Services Industry, which saw 191.921 million shares valued at N2.484 billion change hands in 10,595 deals.
Linkage Assurance Plc, Consolidated Hallmark Holdings Plc, and Universal Insurance Plc emerged as the week’s most active stocks, jointly accounting for 3.195 billion shares worth N6.594 billion in 3,964 transactions. This equated to 36.57 per cent of the total equity turnover volume and 4.90 per cent of its value.
The NGX All-Share Index advanced by 3.18 per cent to close at 145,754.91 points, while the market capitalisation ended the week at N92.215 trillion. Most other indices also closed higher, except for NGX CG, NGX Banking, NGX Pension, NGX AFR Bank Value, NGX AFR Dividend Yield, NGX MERI Value, NGX Growth, and NGX Commodity, which fell by 0.64 per cent, 0.75 per cent, 0.14 per cent, 1.01 per cent, 0.66 per cent, 1.25 per cent, 7.91 per cent and 2.33 per cent respectively.
A total of 66 equities recorded price gains during the week, up from 54 in the previous week. Conversely, 41 equities declined, compared with 49 the week before, while 39 remained unchanged, slightly down from 43 in the preceding week.
The top five decliners were Livingtrust Mortgage Bank, Academy Press, The Initiates Plc, UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust, and Legend Internet Plc, which shed N1.59, N2, N1.75, N1.10, and 75k respectively.
On the gainers’ chart, Mutual Benefits Assurance, AIICO Insurance, Royal Exchange, Sovereign Trust Insurance, and Cornerstone Insurance posted impressive rises of 60.44 per cent, 59.82 per cent, 59.33 per cent, 59.06 per cent, and 54.46 per cent respectively, gaining N1.10, N1.31, 89k, N1.01, and N2.26 apiece.
The Nigerian Exchange Ltd. also announced the listing of the July 2025 Issue of the Federal Government of Nigeria Savings Bonds on Wednesday, 6 August.
Additionally, the NGX launched its Non-Interest Finance Board on Monday. The Exchange explained that the platform was created to expand the Nigerian capital market and promote financial inclusion by providing greater visibility, accessibility, and transparency for non-interest financial instruments.
According to NGX, the Non-Interest Finance Board is designed as a multi-asset platform for securities compliant with Islamic finance principles, covering asset classes such as equities, bonds, and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). The initiative, it added, is part of a broader drive to encourage innovation, diversification, and inclusive growth within Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.
