The Anambra South senatorial by-election on Saturday recorded a low voter turnout across polling units in Ekwusigo and Aguata Local Government Areas, despite the early arrival of electoral materials.
At several polling centres visited, including Obeichi, Umueze Eziagu, Central School, Egbunike Youth Centre, and Ejemili Town Hall in Ekwusigo, the exercise began as scheduled but witnessed very few voters. Similar scenes were reported in Umuchu, Umuona, and Isuofia wards in Aguata, where polling units remained largely empty.
Observers also noted the absence of security personnel at many of the locations, though residents continued their normal activities and the process remained peaceful.
Chairman of Aguata LGA, Dr. Chibueze Oforbuike, who voted at Umuchu Ward I, commended the early arrival of officials and smooth functioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). He, however, appealed to more voters to come out, stressing that participation was key to amplifying citizens’ voices.
Some residents attributed the apathy to lack of interest in the by-election. “This is not a major election like the governorship poll, so many people are not really interested,” said 65-year-old retiree, Emma Onyeneke, after casting his vote at Umuona.
The electoral process has so far been peaceful, with no reports of disruption, though concerns remain over the absence of security presence at several polling units. Voting is scheduled to end at 2:30 p.m.
The Anambra South Senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in a London hospital.
