Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Pius Akutah, says President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms are transforming the maritime industry into a key driver of national growth.
Speaking in Abuja during an interaction with the Conference of Benue Journalists, Akutah described the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy as a game-changing move that signalled the government’s intent to unlock Nigeria’s ocean economy.
He noted that the sector, once underutilised, is now attracting record foreign investment, expanding cargo exports, and benefiting from major infrastructure upgrades at the ports. According to him, vessels that previously left Nigeria empty are now loaded with exports, while inland dry ports and logistics hubs are being developed to link the hinterlands and position Nigeria as West Africa’s maritime gateway.
Akutah credited the progress to Tinubu’s bold policy direction, from subsidy removal to fiscal reforms, which he said have set the economy on a path from slow growth to significant momentum in key sectors. He also commended the administration’s support for sports, citing recent successes by the Super Falcons and D’Tigress.
On political developments in Benue, Akutah lauded the president’s appointment of several indigenes to strategic federal roles, describing it as a sign of trust and support. While acknowledging calls for him to run for governor in 2027, he said he would consult widely before making a decision, emphasising his focus on strengthening the APC and delivering electoral victory for the president.
