Valencia CF look set to step back from their chase for Umar Sadiq, with manager Carlos Corberán now prioritising a move for fellow Nigerian striker Josh Maja ahead of the new LaLiga season.
The Spanish club had been in discussions with Real Sociedad over a possible second loan for Sadiq, who spent last season at Mestalla. His goals were instrumental in helping Valencia avoid relegation, yet the club decided against a permanent deal. Talks over a return had lingered until recently.
Reports in Spain suggest Corberán now views Maja, currently at West Bromwich Albion, as the forward who best fits his tactical vision. The 26-year-old opened last season in prolific form, scoring 12 goals in 26 appearances before injury cut short his campaign. He returned to action in the Baggies’ Championship opener against Derby County.
Maja’s football journey has taken him from the youth setups of Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Manchester City to senior spells in England and France, shining for Sunderland and Bordeaux. Born in Lewisham to Nigerian parents, he was eligible for England but pledged his international future to Nigeria, making his Super Eagles debut in 2019 against Ukraine.
Corberán is reportedly drawn to Maja’s mobility, combination play, and composed finishing, qualities he believes will integrate seamlessly into Valencia’s attack.
Although Maja’s West Brom contract runs until 2026, the absence of fresh renewal talks has encouraged Valencia to act before the transfer window closes. The club is intent on landing a proven scorer for what promises to be a demanding LaLiga campaign, and Maja’s experience across the Premier League, Championship, Ligue 1, and Ligue 2 makes him a strong candidate.
