Izeze Commends Progress on Orere Bridge, Hails Oborevwori’s Commitment to Infrastructure Development

By Nelson Egware

The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the Orere Bridge project in Ughelli South Local Government Area, describing it as another clear testament to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s unwavering commitment to completing inherited projects.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project on Thursday, Izeze acknowledged the challenges posed by heavy rains and difficult terrain but noted that the contractor, J.U. Obakpor Engineering Company, has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adherence to specifications.

“As you can see, despite the elements, the contractor is delivering. From what I have observed and confirmed with our supervising engineers, the structural work is satisfactory and strictly in line with the approved memo. There is no cause for alarm,” he said.

The Commissioner highlighted the progress recorded on the main alignment, reinforcement, and sand-filling works, stressing that critical milestones had been achieved.

He disclosed that the firm was sourcing sharp sand from Kaiama and Bomadi through barges, a process that required significant logistical effort but had not slowed down the pace of delivery.

“From both ends of the alignment, about 500 meters of reinforcement and blinding have been completed. We’ve been assured that in another three weeks, we should be able to drive across the bridge. That gives us confidence that this project is firmly on course,” Izeze added.

He emphasized that the project, valued at about ₦50 billion, underscores Governor Oborevwori’s seriousness in keeping his promises to Deltans.

“If I were governor, I might have diverted such funds to other projects, but His Excellency has shown rare commitment by sustaining this ₦50 billion investment for just one local government.

"This is why I describe him as a promise keeper. He promised to complete all inherited projects, and today, he is fulfilling that pledge,” Izeze noted.

He also commended the communities of Orere and Ewu for their cooperation, assuring them that their patience would soon yield fruit as the project nears completion.

On his part, the Managing Director of J.U. Obakpor Engineering Company, Mr. Ricardo Oguma, reaffirmed the firm’s determination to deliver the project by March 2026.

He admitted that the company had faced challenges, including waterlogged terrain and the complex process of transporting materials, particularly sharp sand, to the site.

“Despite these difficulties, we remain resolute. With the continued support of the state government and host communities, this bridge will be completed and commissioned on schedule,” Oguma assured.

The Orere Bridge, when completed, is expected to significantly improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and enhance the quality of life for residents of Ughelli South and neighboring communities.
