Aliko Dangote Foundation Launches Humanitarian Rice Distribution in Delta State, Earns Praise from Governor Oborevwori

In a remarkable display of philanthropy, the Aliko Dangote Foundation launched a significant humanitarian initiative on Tuesday in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, with the distribution of 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to vulnerable individuals and families across the state. The flag-off ceremony marked a milestone in the foundation’s ongoing commitment to alleviating hardship and fostering community welfare, aligning seamlessly with the state’s developmental priorities under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.

Governor Oborevwori, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, commended the Aliko Dangote Foundation for its unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes. Speaking at the event, he emphasized the deeper significance of the donation, noting that it transcends mere material aid. “While the rice distributed here today may not feed everyone, it represents something much greater — the spirit of care, compassion, and shared humanity,” he stated. He further reflected on the broader impact of such gestures, suggesting that collective acts of kindness, no matter how small, could transform society. “If each of us gives a little of what we have to our neighbors, the world would indeed become a better place,” he added.

The governor hailed the Aliko Dangote Foundation as one of Africa’s most influential philanthropic organizations, noting its transformative impact across the continent. He described the foundation’s work as a beacon of hope, touching millions of lives through its interventions in health, education, empowerment, and nutrition. Governor Oborevwori specifically lauded Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the foundation’s founder, for his genuine compassion and commitment to improving the lives of the underprivileged. “Alhaji Dangote’s compassion and dedication to humanity stand as an inspiration to all. He is not doing this for recognition or politics, but out of a genuine desire to make life better for others,” he remarked.

Highlighting the collaborative spirit between the Delta State government and the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Governor Oborevwori noted that such partnerships are critical in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges. He outlined his administration’s efforts to support vulnerable populations, including an annual allocation of ₦1.8 billion to provide monthly support for 10,000 widows and their enrollment in the state’s Contributory Health Scheme. Additional empowerment programs spearheaded by various state ministries have also impacted thousands, reflecting a robust framework for social welfare. To ensure the rice distribution achieves its intended purpose, the governor called for transparency and fairness in the process, urging that the aid reaches the designated beneficiaries — the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and orphanage homes — without diversion or misuse.

Representing the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Mr. Victor Ejiro, Head of Operations, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting communities nationwide. “We are delighted to be in Delta State today for the official presentation of 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to support vulnerable individuals and families across the state,” he said. Ejiro explained that the rice distribution is part of a broader national initiative covering all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria, targeting artisans, market women, widows, and persons with disabilities. He emphasized the foundation’s collaboration with local government councils to ensure the aid reaches those who need it most, directly within their communities.

Established over three decades ago, the Aliko Dangote Foundation has become a cornerstone of philanthropy in Africa, focusing on critical areas such as health, education, and nutrition. Ejiro commended Governor Oborevwori for his administration’s dedication to food security and welfare programs, noting that the foundation’s intervention complements the state’s efforts to mitigate the economic hardships faced by vulnerable families.

In her welcome address, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community, and Social Development, Hon. Pat Ajudua, underscored the timeliness of the initiative amid ongoing economic challenges, particularly those exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Every effort aimed at making life easier for [the vulnerable] is not only commendable but highly necessary,” she said. Ajudua expressed optimism that the rice distribution marks the beginning of further collaborative efforts, aligning with Delta State’s ethos of always striving for more and giving more.

Chief Isaiah Esiovwa, Chairman of Okpe Local Government Council and the state’s ALGON Chairman, also praised the Aliko Dangote Foundation for its compassionate gesture. Speaking on behalf of the 25 Local Government Chairmen in Delta State, he described the initiative as a powerful example of service and compassion that resonates with grassroots leadership values. “This gesture is truly commendable. The Foundation has set an example of compassion and service that reflects the values we uphold as leaders at the grassroots level,” he said.

The beneficiaries of the rice distribution include a diverse group of vulnerable individuals and organizations, such as physically challenged persons, the elderly, ex-lepers, orphanages, charity homes, the Christian Association of Nigeria, and the Muslim community. The initiative is designed to provide immediate relief while reinforcing the foundation’s broader mission of fostering sustainable development and empowerment.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation’s rice distribution in Delta State not only addresses immediate food security needs but also strengthens the bond between public and private sectors in tackling socio-economic challenges. By prioritizing the most vulnerable, the foundation continues to set a high standard for philanthropy, inspiring others to contribute to the collective well-being of society. As Delta State and the Aliko Dangote Foundation deepen their partnership, the initiative promises to pave the way for more impactful interventions, ensuring that compassion and care remain at the forefront of development efforts in the region.
