In a significant move to advance the developmental agenda of Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has unveiled a N415.57 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year. The budget, presented to the Ekiti State House of Assembly at the Old Assembly Complex in Ado-Ekiti, is aptly titled the “Budget of Impactful Governance.” It underscores the governor’s commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, and the accelerated completion of ongoing projects across the state. The proposal marks a strategic effort to consolidate the achievements of the past three years while aligning with the state’s long-term vision for prosperity and development.
The 2026 budget is structured to allocate N221.87 billion to recurrent expenditure, which accounts for 53 percent of the total estimate, and N193.70 billion to capital expenditure, representing 46 percent. This distribution reflects a balanced approach to addressing immediate operational needs while prioritizing investments in infrastructure and transformative projects. The proposed budget represents an 11 percent increase over the N375.79 billion approved for the 2025 fiscal year, signaling the administration’s ambitious plans to scale up development efforts in response to the state’s growing needs.
Governor Oyebanji, during his address to the lawmakers, emphasized that the budget was carefully crafted to build on the milestones achieved since his administration took office. He highlighted the focus on key sectors such as agriculture, wealth creation, and human welfare, which are central to his Shared Prosperity Agenda. This agenda, a cornerstone of his governance philosophy, aims to uplift the living standards of Ekiti residents through inclusive and sustainable development initiatives. The governor noted that the budget was informed by extensive consultations with communities and civil society groups during town hall meetings held across the state’s three senatorial districts. These engagements ensured that the priorities and aspirations of the people were reflected in the fiscal plan, fostering a participatory approach to governance.
Funding for the 2026 budget is expected to come from a combination of sources, including federal allocations, Value Added Tax (VAT), internally generated revenue (IGR), grants from donor agencies, and other income streams. Governor Oyebanji reiterated his administration’s commitment to fiscal prudence, assuring the public that resources would be utilized efficiently to maximize impact. “Our administration has demonstrated a high level of fiscal discipline and prudence in the utilization of our commonwealth,” he stated. “These projects are not only impactful; they will set our state on the path of realizing the Shared Prosperity vision.” This pledge underscores the governor’s focus on ensuring that public funds are deployed in a manner that delivers tangible benefits to the people of Ekiti.
The 2026 budget aligns with the Ekiti State Development Plan (2021–2050) and the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (2026–2028), providing a roadmap for sustainable growth over the long term. Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the fiscal plan is designed to consolidate the progress made in critical areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Reflecting on the performance of the 2025 budget, he highlighted notable achievements, including extensive road rehabilitation projects and the renovation of eight general hospitals. These initiatives have improved access to quality healthcare and enhanced connectivity across the state, contributing to the overall well-being of residents.
In a gesture of appreciation, the governor acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, noting that federal interventions have played a crucial role in poverty reduction and infrastructure development in Ekiti. He cited various programs that have bolstered the state’s efforts to address socio-economic challenges and improve the quality of life for its citizens. This collaboration between the state and federal governments has been instrumental in driving Ekiti’s development agenda forward.
The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, responded positively to the governor’s presentation, commending the proposal for its focus on impactful governance. He assured the public that the Assembly would thoroughly scrutinize the budget to ensure that allocations are directed toward projects and programs that reflect the aspirations of the people. “Every naira will be accounted for and channeled to sectors with maximum public impact,” Aribasoye declared, signaling the legislature’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He also called on heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prepare for rigorous budget defense sessions, emphasizing the Assembly’s role in ensuring that the fiscal plan is both realistic and effective.
The budget presentation was attended by key stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, the Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Oyeniyi Adebayo, traditional rulers, and members of the State Executive Council. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the collective commitment to advancing Ekiti’s development agenda.
As Ekiti State moves toward the 2026 fiscal year, the proposed budget represents a bold step toward achieving sustainable growth and prosperity. By prioritizing fiscal discipline, community-driven priorities, and the completion of ongoing projects, Governor Oyebanji’s administration is laying a strong foundation for a future where every Ekiti resident can thrive. The emphasis on transparency and accountability further reinforces public trust in the government’s ability to deliver on its promises. With the support of the State House of Assembly and the active participation of citizens, Ekiti State is poised to make significant strides in its quest for impactful governance and shared prosperity.
