Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Reaffirms Commitment to Church Partnership for Sustainable Development

In a heartfelt address during a special Mass held in Bomadi to mark the 70th birthday of Most Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Egbebo, the Bishop of Bomadi Catholic Diocese, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering a robust partnership with the church to drive sustainable development across the state. The governor, represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, underscored the church’s pivotal role not only in Delta State but also in Nigeria’s broader developmental landscape, describing it as a cornerstone for progress and societal transformation.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the church remains a vital ally in the state’s quest for meaningful governance and sustainable growth. He highlighted the importance of the church’s contributions through prayers, wise counsel, and community-driven initiatives, which he described as indispensable in navigating the complexities of governance in challenging times. “The prayers and support of the church are critical in making governance more impactful and responsive to the needs of the people,” Oborevwori stated, urging religious institutions to continue their collaboration with the government to achieve shared goals of progress and equity.

The governor took the opportunity to commend Bishop Egbebo for his exemplary leadership and fearless advocacy for the marginalized and oppressed in society. He noted that the bishop’s dedication to speaking truth to power and championing the cause of the voiceless aligns with the state government’s vision of inclusive and equitable development. Oborevwori reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure that no part of Delta State is left behind in the march toward progress, emphasizing that his policies and projects are designed to uplift all communities, regardless of their geographic or economic status.

A significant portion of the governor’s address focused on his administration’s achievements in infrastructure development, particularly in the Bomadi region and its environs. He highlighted the completion of critical road projects, including the Ohoror–Bomadi Road and the Tamigbe–Torugbene Road, which have significantly improved connectivity and economic activity in these areas. Additionally, he pointed to the ongoing Ayakoromor Bridge project, which is nearing completion and is expected to further enhance transportation and trade in the region. These projects, according to the governor, are part of his broader vision to establish Delta State as a hub of world-class infrastructure, with a goal of creating the best network of roads in Nigeria by the end of his tenure.

The Mass, held in honor of Bishop Egbebo’s milestone birthday, was a moment of reflection and celebration, drawing dignitaries from across the ecclesiastical and political spheres. In his homily, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, the Bishop of Warri Diocese, delivered a powerful message on the importance of gratitude and accountability. He reminded the congregation that life is a precious gift that must be cherished and used responsibly. “We must be thankful for the gift of life and recognize that we will all be called to account for how we have utilized our blessings,” Bishop Ewherido said, urging everyone to live purposefully and contribute meaningfully to society.

Bishop Egbebo, the celebrant, expressed his gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for the transformative infrastructure projects in Bomadi, particularly the reconstruction of the Ohoror–Bomadi Road, which has eased transportation challenges for residents and boosted local commerce. He assured the governor of the church’s continued prayers and support for the success of his administration, emphasizing the importance of a symbiotic relationship between the church and the state in fostering peace, unity, and development.

The event was graced by prominent figures, including the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubueze, and Bishop Anthony Ewherido. The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was also represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, underscoring the regional significance of the celebration. The gathering served as a testament to the strong ties between the church and the government in Delta State, as well as the shared commitment to advancing the welfare of the people.

Governor Oborevwori’s remarks and the celebratory atmosphere of the event highlighted the enduring partnership between the Delta State government and the church. This collaboration, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for progress, continues to play a crucial role in addressing the state’s developmental challenges. By prioritizing infrastructure, social equity, and spiritual guidance, the Oborevwori administration is laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth, with the church as a key partner in this transformative journey. The governor’s pledge to deliver unparalleled infrastructure and inclusive governance signals a bright future for Delta State, as it strives to become a model of development in Nigeria.
