The Bauchi State Government has received a substantial donation of hospital and medical equipment from World Medical Relief, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization specializing in repurposing surplus medical supplies for underserved communities worldwide. The donation, valued at millions of U.S. dollars, includes items such as patient care equipment, nutrition treatment tools, electronic beds, wheelchairs, and delivery components.
Dr. Sani Mohammed Dambam, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, received the first consignment on behalf of the government. Speaking during the handover, Dambam expressed profound gratitude, stating that the equipment would significantly boost the state's health sector. "These items will be distributed to state specialist hospitals, general hospitals, and primary healthcare centres," he said, emphasizing that "they are for use, not for storing."
The commissioner revealed that the donation was facilitated by Governor Senator Bala Mohammed during a visit to World Medical Relief last year. He explained that five containers are expected in total, with one already arrived and the others en route from Lagos port.
Dambam noted that the donation complements the administration's ongoing efforts to renovate and equip health facilities across Bauchi State, aligning with broader goals to improve healthcare access and quality. The governor's proactive engagement with international partners has been credited for securing this support, aimed at addressing gaps in medical infrastructure amid economic constraints.
World Medical Relief, founded in 1953 and based in Detroit, Michigan, focuses on collecting and distributing donated medical supplies to global regions in need. The organization's contributions often include essential hospital furnishings and therapeutic devices, helping bridge resource shortages in developing countries.
This gesture comes as Bauchi State continues investments in health, including recent upgrades to specialist hospitals and primary care centers. The equipment is expected to enhance service delivery in maternal and child health, emergency care, and general patient management.
As distribution commences, stakeholders have hailed the partnership as a model for collaborative development, reinforcing Bauchi's commitment to equitable healthcare.
