Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 on December 18, 2025, at a ceremony in Salford, capping a landmark season. The 36-year-old topped a public vote, becoming the third golfer to claim the prestigious award and the first since Nick Faldo in 1989.
McIlroy's triumph was driven by his dramatic Masters victory in April, where he defeated Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff to complete the career Grand Slam—joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as the sixth man in history to win all four majors. This ended an 11-year major drought for McIlroy, whose previous major title came at the 2014 PGA Championship.
His year also featured a pivotal role in Europe's Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black in September, securing an away win for the first time since 2012 with a 15-13 scoreline. McIlroy added a seventh Race to Dubai title—his fourth consecutive—further solidifying his dominance.
In an emotional acceptance speech, McIlroy said: "Wow. First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the other finalists. I know how much hard work and dedication it takes, so it is a pleasure to just be in this room. I feel truly honored to just be a part of it; 2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true. From Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything in between. It's the year dreams are made of."
McIlroy edged out England's Women's Rugby World Cup star Ellie Kildunne, who finished second, and Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris in third. Other shortlisted nominees included Lionesses duo Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton (Euro 2025 winners) and darts sensation Luke Littler.
Shortly before the main award, Team Europe was voted Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup success. McIlroy, alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, accepted the prize. Fellow European Justin Rose posted on social media: “Wow … Thank you for everybody that voted for us. What a night for @DPWorldTour and golf.”
The ceremony also honored other achievements: Sarina Wiegman (Coach of the Year for guiding England to Euro 2025 glory), Michelle Agyemang (Young Sports Personality of the Year for her breakout Euro performances), and Armand Duplantis (World Sport Star for the second straight year).
McIlroy's win marks golf's return to prominence in the awards after a 36-year gap, reflecting his transformative 2025 season that blended individual immortality with team triumph.
