Abuja – December 6, 2025 – The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has formally expelled Hon. Uzokwe Peter, the member representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, for alleged anti-party activities that the party described as “gross misconduct.”
The decision was taken at the party’s 24th Extra-Ordinary National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on December 4 and contained in an official communiqué signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola Martins.
According to the communiqué, the NEC upheld an earlier recommendation by the National Working Committee after reviewing multiple petitions and video evidence showing Uzokwe publicly endorsing the re-election of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) during the recent governorship election, despite YPP fielding its own candidate.
The party stated that Uzokwe’s actions violated Section 36(7), Articles (b), (f), and (o) of the YPP Constitution and reaffirmed its “zero-tolerance policy for acts that undermine unity, discipline, and cohesion within the party.”
In the same meeting, the NEC elected new national officers to fill existing vacancies in accordance with the Electoral Act. The new appointees are:
- Nana Mahmoud – Deputy National Chairperson
- Chigozie Udogu – Deputy National Secretary
- Uche Levis – National Legal Adviser
- Owoyombo Solomon – Acting National Youth Leader
- Paul Chukwuma – National Leader
- Sani Darma – North West Zonal Chairman
- Hon. Olatunbosun Abolarinwa – National Security Adviser
The NEC congratulated the new officers and urged them to discharge their duties with diligence, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the Young Progressives Party.
A unanimous vote of confidence was also passed in the National Chairman, Bishop Amakiri, following a motion moved by the Kaduna State Chairman, Mikailu Abubakar, and seconded by the Ekiti State Chairman, Owoola Daramola.
On national security, the NEC welcomed the recent appointment of retired Lt. Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa as Minister of Defence following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. The party described General Musa as “a round peg in a round hole” and urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that all strategic security positions are filled with competent professionals rather than political appointees. It specifically called for “the same level of scrutiny” to be applied to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
In a strongly worded section, the communiqué accused President Tinubu and certain political actors of attempting to move Nigeria toward a one-party state, warning that such efforts “pose a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.” It stressed that “the strength and beauty of democracy lie in healthy multiparty competition, respect for dissent, and the freedom of political association.”
The NEC concluded by reaffirming the Young Progressives Party’s commitment to internal democracy, national development, and the defence of Nigeria’s democratic space.
The expulsion of Uzokwe Peter, who was elected on the YPP platform in 2023, reduces the party’s already small representation in the House of Representatives and comes at a time when YPP is working to consolidate its position as a credible third force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While Uzokwe has not yet issued a public response, sources close to him suggest he may formally defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress or APGA in the coming days.
