Delta State Government Accelerates Urban Transformation: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Set to Flag Off Otovwodo Flyover on January 12

In a bold continuation of his administration's aggressive infrastructure renewal drive, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is scheduled to perform the official groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated Otovwodo Junction Flyover in Ughelli on Monday, January 12, 2026. This landmark event marks another significant milestone in the governor's MORE Agenda, which prioritizes Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security across the state.

The ceremony, set for 11:00 a.m. at the project site along the busy East-West Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area, was announced in a statement by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon. Guests have been advised to be seated by 10:30 a.m. to ensure a smooth commencement. This formal groundbreaking comes after months of preparatory activities, including site mobilization and preliminary works by the renowned contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, demonstrating the administration's unwavering commitment to timely project delivery.

The Otovwodo Junction Flyover is one of two major flyover projects recently approved by the Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) in July 2025, with a combined value exceeding N98 billion. The Otovwodo project alone is valued at approximately N39.3 billion, while its counterpart at Uromi Junction in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, costs around N59 billion. Both are being executed by Julius Berger, a company synonymous with high-quality infrastructure in Nigeria, known for delivering iconic flyovers and bridges across the country.

These new approvals build on the near-completion of three earlier flyovers initiated under Governor Oborevwori's leadership: the PTI Junction Flyover, DSC Roundabout Flyover, and Enerhen Junction Flyover in the Warri/Effurun metropolis. Recent reports indicate that sections of these projects have already been opened to traffic, providing immense relief to motorists and boosting commercial activities in the oil-rich region. The DSC Roundabout Flyover, for instance, was commended for injecting new life into Uvwie Local Government Area, with residents applauding the enhanced mobility and safety.

Recognizing the potential disruptions during construction, Governor Oborevwori proactively directed the development of four adjoining roads around Otovwodo Junction: Ovie Palace Road, Okogbe Road, Oyakemeagbegha Street, and Edo Road. These alternative routes aim to decongest the notoriously busy junction—a critical intersection on the East-West Highway—and minimize inconvenience to residents, commuters, and businesses in Ughelli, a bustling commercial hub in Delta Central Senatorial District.

Similarly, preliminary works have commenced at the Uromi Junction site in Agbor, with heavy-duty equipment already deployed. The groundbreaking for this project is anticipated to be announced soon, further underscoring the equitable spread of infrastructure investments across Delta's three senatorial districts.

Governor Oborevwori's infrastructure push aligns with his vision to modernize Delta State, improve traffic management, enhance road safety, and stimulate economic growth. Ughelli and Agbor, both strategic urban centers, have long grappled with chronic traffic congestion due to increasing vehicular movement, commercial activities, and population growth. The flyovers are expected to feature advanced designs, including ramps, retaining walls, stormwater drainage systems, and connecting roads, ensuring long-term durability and efficiency.

This initiative is part of a broader portfolio of over 70 road projects—spanning more than 150 kilometers—either completed, ongoing, or newly awarded in 2025 alone. From riverine areas like the inaugurated 12.1km Odimodi–Okuntu–Ogulagha Road to urban renewals in Warri and Asaba, the administration has demonstrated a balanced approach to development. Partnerships with Julius Berger, strengthened during the governor's 2025 visit to Germany, have facilitated swift mobilization and world-class execution.

Community leaders and residents have expressed profound gratitude, with groups like the Urhobo Ex-Militants Forum and local stakeholders hailing the Otovwodo project as a game-changer for Ughelli North. The flyovers are seen not just as engineering feats but as catalysts for economic empowerment, safer travel, and urban beautification.

As Delta State continues to emerge as a powerhouse in the Niger Delta, Governor Oborevwori's focus on tangible, people-oriented projects reinforces public confidence in his leadership. The January 12 groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes hope for seamless connectivity and prosperity, reminding Deltans that the MORE Agenda is delivering visible progress—one flyover, one road, and one community at a time.

With construction already underway and the formal flag-off imminent, the Otovwodo and Uromi flyovers promise to redefine transportation in Delta State, fostering a safer, more efficient, and economically vibrant environment for generations to come.
