The Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA), Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, has firmly dismissed as false, misleading, and deliberately malicious a circulating online report alleging that a Delta State High Court delivered a judgment against the agency on January 10, 2026. The publication, which has gained traction on social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram, claims the court ruled against DESTMA's enforcement powers in a case purportedly heard in Asaba.
Speaking at a press briefing held on Monday, January 13, 2026, in Asaba, Hon. Okiemute categorically stated that DESTMA has no knowledge of any such judgment. He emphasized that the agency was neither served with any court processes, invited to participate in legal proceedings, nor notified of any ruling related to the alleged claims. "The attention of DESTMA management has been drawn to this publication circulating on social media, which appears to be a deliberate attempt to prejudice our operations and discredit the hard work and achievements of our dedicated officers," the DG declared.
He pointed out that social media posts and unverified online articles do not constitute official or recognized channels for government communications or judicial pronouncements. In the absence of formal service or official documentation from the judiciary, the so-called judgment holds no legal standing or validity. Hon. Okiemute urged the public, motorists, and all road users to disregard the report in its entirety and to rely solely on verified sources, such as official government statements, court registries, or announcements from the Delta State Ministry of Justice.
This swift rebuttal comes amid heightened public scrutiny of traffic enforcement agencies across Nigeria, where debates over administrative fines, arrests, and constitutional compliance frequently arise. DESTMA, established under the Delta State Traffic Management Authority Law of 2013, operates as a key agency under the Ministry of Transport, tasked with maintaining road safety, orderliness, and efficient traffic flow throughout the state. The authority deploys officers to monitor compliance with traffic regulations, issue notices for violations, and ensure offenders face appropriate sanctions.
A core aspect of DESTMA's operations involves processing traffic offenders through established legal frameworks. When violations are detected, offenders are informed of their infractions and, where necessary, required to appear before a Mobile Court presided over by a qualified judge. These courts, set up specifically for expeditious handling of minor traffic matters, determine penalties in line with the law. Judges retain full discretion to impose fines, grant leniency to first-time offenders, or apply stricter measures for repeat or severe violations — all while upholding principles of due process and fair hearing.
Hon. Okiemute stressed that DESTMA adheres strictly to its rules of engagement as outlined in the gazetted enabling laws. "Enforcement is an integral part of traffic management. We ensure that offenders are made aware of the violations they have committed, and all actions are processed in accordance with legal procedures," he explained. The agency has consistently maintained that its mandate prioritizes public safety, reducing accidents, and promoting orderly road use in a state where rapid urbanization, commercial activities, and heavy vehicular movement — particularly in hubs like Asaba, Warri, and Ughelli — demand robust regulation.
The DG highlighted recent reforms under his leadership, which have significantly improved the agency's efficiency and public perception. Since assuming office, Hon. Okiemute has overseen a remarkable turnaround, including infrastructure upgrades, staff reorganization, the establishment of specialized units such as the Provost and Intelligence Units, and a transition toward a more structured paramilitary framework. These changes contributed to a reported 273% revenue surge in his first year, reflecting better accountability and operational effectiveness while maintaining professionalism.
The press briefing also addressed broader concerns about misinformation in the digital age. With social media amplifying unverified claims at lightning speed, such reports can erode public trust in institutions and potentially incite non-compliance with essential traffic rules. Hon. Okiemute warned that those responsible for publishing what he termed "false and defamatory information" would face accountability. "Relevant security agencies are already taking steps to identify and apprehend those behind this malicious campaign. The long arm of the law will catch up with them," he asserted.
He reiterated DESTMA's unwavering commitment to professionalism and legality. "Our officers will continue to carry out their duties diligently, within the confines of the law, and in the best interest of public safety across Delta State. We have not acted, and will not act, outside our mandate," the Director-General affirmed.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by state agencies in combating fake news, especially when it targets governance and public order. In recent years, similar viral falsehoods have targeted various Delta State initiatives, prompting repeated clarifications from government officials. The public is encouraged to verify information through official channels, including DESTMA's verified social media pages, the Delta State Government website, or direct inquiries at agency offices.
As Delta State continues to prioritize road safety under Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori's MORE Agenda — which emphasizes meaningful development and realistic reforms — DESTMA remains a frontline defender of orderly traffic. Compliance with regulations not only prevents accidents but also supports economic activities by ensuring smoother movement of goods and people.
Motorists and residents are reminded to obey traffic signs, avoid distractions, and cooperate with enforcement officers. In cases of disputes, the proper avenue remains the Mobile Courts, where justice is administered transparently. By dismissing the unfounded claims and calling for vigilance against misinformation, DESTMA seeks to reinforce trust, maintain operational integrity, and continue safeguarding lives on Delta State's roads.
