Senator Austin Akobundu, who currently represents the Abia Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The development marks a significant political shift in Abia State and adds to the ongoing political realignments within Nigeria’s major political parties. The lawmaker communicated his decision through a letter titled “Notice of Formal Resignation,” in which he declared that his resignation from the party takes immediate effect.
The resignation letter was addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko, located in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, where Akobundu hails from. In the letter, the senator expressed deep appreciation to the party and its leadership for the opportunities they provided him over the years to serve both the party and the nation in different capacities.
Senator Akobundu explained that his decision was not taken lightly. According to him, the current state of internal crises within the PDP played a major role in influencing his decision to step away from the party. He described the situation within the party as unfortunate and deeply concerning, noting that the persistent disagreements and unresolved conflicts have created an environment that has become increasingly difficult to navigate.
In his words, the senator said that Nigeria’s political landscape is evolving, and leaders must sometimes make difficult decisions in order to remain effective in their service to the people. He noted that after a long period of reflection and extensive consultations with his political associates, supporters, and other stakeholders, he concluded that leaving the party had become both a painful and necessary step.
Akobundu acknowledged that his journey within the PDP had been both meaningful and impactful. Throughout his political career, he has held several important positions and has played various roles in advancing the objectives of the party. The senator therefore used the letter to reflect on the mutually beneficial relationship he shared with the PDP and the trust the party placed in him over the years.
He wrote that he had carefully reviewed his political journey with the PDP and felt compelled to express gratitude to the party leadership and members for the confidence they reposed in him. According to him, the party provided him with opportunities to contribute to national development and to serve in different strategic and critical capacities within both the party structure and government institutions.
Despite his decision to step away, Senator Akobundu maintained a respectful tone throughout the letter. Rather than criticising individuals within the party, he focused on the broader structural challenges and internal conflicts that have plagued the PDP for a long period. He described the crises as “sad and seemingly intractable,” suggesting that repeated attempts to resolve the issues have not yielded lasting solutions.
The senator emphasised that his resignation followed wide consultations with his supporters and political allies. These consultations, he explained, helped him assess the current political environment and determine the best path forward for his political career and for the people he represents. After weighing all considerations, he concluded that remaining in the party was no longer in alignment with his political direction.
Although the resignation marks a major shift in his political affiliation, Senator Akobundu did not reveal in the letter which political party he intends to join next. His silence on this issue has already sparked speculation among political observers and analysts who are closely watching the evolving dynamics in Abia State politics and the wider national political landscape.
Political commentators believe that his next move could significantly influence political alignments within the state, especially as Nigeria gradually approaches another election cycle. Defections and realignments have become a common feature in the country’s political environment, particularly when internal party conflicts remain unresolved for extended periods.
In the concluding part of his resignation letter, Senator Akobundu reaffirmed that his departure from the PDP does not erase the history and relationships he built while serving within the party. He reiterated his appreciation for the platform the party gave him to contribute to governance and national development.
He also extended his best wishes to the party as it continues its political activities and internal reforms. According to him, despite the challenges facing the PDP, he hopes the party will eventually overcome its internal disputes and continue to play a constructive role in Nigeria’s democratic process.
“It is with immense regret that I write to inform you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter stated. He further noted that he had taken time to reflect deeply on his journey with the party and wished to thank its leadership for the opportunities he was given to serve.
He added that the decision came after observing the persistent crises that have affected the party for a long time. Following extensive consultations with his associates and supporters, he concluded that resigning from the party had become a necessary step.
Senator Akobundu officially confirmed that his resignation takes effect from March 10, 2026, bringing an end to his formal membership of the PDP.
As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, observers will be watching closely to see the next political direction the Abia Central senator chooses. His eventual political alignment could have significant implications not only for Abia State politics but also for the broader national political configuration.
