President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors to provide additional incentives to residents, warning that escalating tensions in the Middle East between the US, Israel, and Iran could push up inflation and erode Nigerians’ purchasing power.
The appeal was made on Sunday, March 22, while Tinubu hosted Vice-President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors at his Lagos residence in celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
“We should care more for the vulnerable. I know this Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power. The labour union and others will be gearing to ask us to support more due to the effect of the Middle East war and crisis,” he said.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged governors to remain steadfast in translating their visions into policies and programmes that directly improve citizens’ livelihoods, while supporting the federal government’s efforts to combat insecurity.
Tinubu stressed that tackling insecurity remains a priority for his administration, noting that the safety and well-being of Nigerians were central to his recent discussions during his state visit to the United Kingdom.
“Your presence here today and the number show your sincerity, commitment, and value for friendship and togetherness. The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country. I am making all the efforts to ensure that we collectively share the joy of our victory over tyranny. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity. I am glad you are all mindful of the challenge,” he said.
The President further highlighted ongoing efforts to secure international support for Nigeria’s security apparatus, including follow-up discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron to obtain military equipment and operational assistance.
“One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support. I can report to you that yesterday, again, I had a lengthy discussion with Emmanuel Macron. They are collaborating with us for equipment and support. I am also making frantic efforts to contact other nations,” Tinubu added.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to equipping the nation’s security forces and ensuring that state and federal efforts work in tandem to protect citizens while mitigating the economic impact of global crises.
