Cruzeiro lifted the Campeonato Mineiro trophy on Sunday after a tense 1–0 victory over fierce rivals Atlético Mineiro in the state championship final, but the celebratory mood was overshadowed by an extraordinary post-match brawl that resulted in a record 23 players being sent off.
The decisive moment came in Belo Horizonte when forward Kaio Jorge scored the only goal of the game, securing Cruzeiro’s first Minas Gerais state title since 2019 under the guidance of head coach Tite, the former Brazil national team manager.
The match itself had been fiercely contested, but the real drama unfolded in the dying moments. According to reports, the chaos erupted after Atlético Mineiro goalkeeper Everson collided with Cruzeiro midfielder Christian while pursuing a loose ball. Everson then pushed Christian to the ground and briefly placed his knee on the player’s chest — an action that immediately provoked a furious reaction.
Christian’s teammates rushed in to confront Everson, shoving the goalkeeper into the goalpost. Within seconds, the incident escalated into a full-scale melee involving players from both benches and the pitch. Security personnel and coaching staff struggled to separate the combatants as punches, shoves, and scuffles spread across the field.
Referee Matheus Delgado Candancan did not issue any red cards during the match due to the sheer scale and speed of the confrontation, which made it impossible to single out individuals on the field. However, Brazilian media outlet Globo later reported that match officials retrospectively dismissed 23 players after reviewing footage and consulting with disciplinary authorities.
Cruzeiro had 12 players sent off, including goalscorer Kaio Jorge. Atlético Mineiro saw 11 players dismissed, among them former Atlético Madrid and Nottingham Forest defender Renan Lodi and veteran forward Hulk, a former Brazil international.
Speaking after the game, Hulk expressed regret over the scenes that unfolded. “It’s regrettable,” he said. “We cannot set that example because it ends up having repercussions all around the world. We have a responsibility to safeguard our image and the image of the institution.”
The mass dismissals are expected to trigger lengthy suspensions and heavy fines from the Minas Gerais state football federation, potentially impacting both teams’ preparations for the remainder of the domestic season.
The chaotic scenes come at a difficult time for both clubs in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. After four matches in the national league, Atlético Mineiro sit 17th in the table, while Cruzeiro occupy 19th place — positions that place both sides in or near the relegation zone.
Despite the off-field controversy, the result marks a significant achievement for Cruzeiro and coach Tite, who has brought stability and silverware to the club in his first state campaign. The Campeonato Mineiro title provides a morale boost, even as the focus now shifts to addressing disciplinary fallout and improving league form.
The incident has already drawn widespread condemnation across Brazilian football, with commentators highlighting the need for greater player discipline and respect for the sport’s image on the global stage. Further statements from both clubs and the relevant authorities are anticipated in the coming days as the full disciplinary process begins.
