Abuja, March 16, 2026 — Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu has forecasted a potential end to President Bola Tinubu's political dominance in the 2027 general elections, should former Vice President Atiku Abubakar form a North-South alliance ticket with a prominent southern figure such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi.
Speaking on Channels Television's "Politics Today" program on Sunday, March 15, Momodu emphasized that such a coalition could dismantle the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)'s hold on power, particularly undermining Tinubu's influence within the party.
"I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person that comes from the South, Tinubu will be gone. It will be the end of Tinubu’s foundation, not the APC," Momodu stated, arguing that a balanced regional ticket centered on Atiku would exploit existing divisions and appeal to a broad electorate.
Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party - PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), and Rotimi Amaechi (formerly APC) contested the 2023 presidential race on separate platforms but have since converged under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner. The trio's alignment is seen as a strategic move to challenge and unseat President Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 polls, with each expressing interest in vying for the presidency.
The ADC, positioning itself as a viable opposition force, has announced plans for its national convention on April 14, 2026. This will follow a series of ward and state congresses commencing on April 7, aimed at reorganizing the party structure and selecting flagbearers.
Momodu's comments come amid growing speculation about opposition mergers in Nigeria's polarized political landscape, where regional balances have historically played a pivotal role in electoral outcomes. Tinubu, who won the 2023 election with 37% of the vote, faces economic challenges including inflation and fuel subsidy reforms, which critics like Momodu argue could further erode his support base.
Neither the presidency nor the mentioned politicians have immediately responded to Momodu's predictions. As the 2027 race heats up, analysts suggest that alliances like the one proposed could reshape the contest, potentially leading to a fragmented APC or a unified opposition front.
