Retirees of the Federal Civil Service under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS) have publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s attention to the welfare of pensioners, particularly the consistent and timely payment of their entitlements.
The commendation was made during a large-scale rally organised by the union at the Mini Campus of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday, March 7, 2026. The event drew thousands of participants from Kwara and neighbouring states including Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Edo, and parts of the Southeast.
Speaking at the rally, the Kwara State Chairman of NUPCPS, Dr Henry Omotosho, described the gathering as a deliberate expression of gratitude to the President for the positive changes retirees have experienced under his leadership.
“The event was organised to express appreciation to the President for what Almighty God has used him to do for the retirees,” Dr Omotosho stated.
He highlighted the administration’s commitment to addressing long-standing issues in the pension system, noting that prompt payment of entitlements has brought significant relief to many elderly citizens who had previously faced delays, arrears, and uncertainties.
The rally served as both a thanksgiving assembly and a show of solidarity among pensioners from across the region. Participants carried placards and banners expressing appreciation for the Tinubu administration’s efforts in pension reforms, improved remittances to the Contributory Pension Scheme, and overall focus on the welfare of retired federal workers.
The NUPCPS leadership emphasised that the commendation was not politically motivated but rooted in tangible improvements retirees have witnessed since the current administration assumed office. They pointed to regular pension disbursements, efforts to clear legacy arrears in some cases, and ongoing engagements with pension operators and the National Pension Commission (PenCom) as key factors behind the positive sentiment.
The event also provided an opportunity for retirees to share personal testimonies of how timely pension payments have helped them meet medical needs, support family responsibilities, and maintain dignity in retirement.
The rally reflects growing confidence among some segments of the pensioner community in the federal government’s handling of pension-related matters, even as broader discussions on pension sustainability, minimum pension amounts, and inflation adjustments continue across the country.
As the Tinubu administration approaches the mid-point of its term, the commendation from NUPCPS retirees in Kwara and surrounding states adds to the voices acknowledging progress in the welfare of senior citizens, while underscoring the importance of sustained reforms to ensure long-term security for all retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
