MAIDUGURI — Former Rabiu Kwankwaso has strongly condemned the multiple bomb explosions that shook Maiduguri on Monday, March 16, describing the attacks as “horrific” and senseless.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the former governor and leader of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) expressed deep sadness over the incident, which claimed at least 23 lives and left over 100 people injured, according to the Nigeria Police Force.
Kwankwaso noted that these attacks, suspected to have been carried out by terrorist groups, threaten the peace that communities in Borno State and the wider region have struggled to reclaim.
“These latest attacks, following other recent incidents in Borno, signal a disturbing resurgence of senseless terrorism that threatens the peace our communities have struggled so hard to rebuild after years of relative calm. This cannot be tolerated,” he said.
He urged relevant government agencies and security forces to act decisively, stressing that soldiers on the frontline must be fully equipped to tackle insurgents effectively. “Now is not the time for defensiveness or complacency. Our gallant armed forces must be fully empowered to take decisive, proactive action against these enemies of Nigeria. The Federal and State governments must leave no stone unturned in providing all necessary resources and support to enable our troops to decisively defeat these terrorist networks,” Kwankwaso added.
The former governor also commiserated with the families of the victims and extended his condolences to the Borno State government. “My heart goes out to the bereaved families, the injured, and all the people of Borno State. I extend my deepest condolences to the government, and the citizens of Borno during this difficult time,” he said.
