Iran Rejects US President Trump's Ultimatum as Middle East Conflict Escalates with Strikes on Multiple Fronts

Tehran/Beirut/Washington – March 2, 2026 – Iran has categorically rejected an ultimatum from US President Donald Trump demanding that its forces lay down their weapons, vowing to continue retaliatory actions amid a rapidly widening regional war. The escalation follows a major joint US-Israeli military operation launched on February 28, 2026, which targeted Iranian leadership, nuclear facilities, ballistic missile sites, and military infrastructure, resulting in the confirmed death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Trump, in a video address released shortly after the initial strikes—dubbed Operation Epic Fury—urged members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), armed forces, and police to surrender, promising "total immunity" if they complied and warning of "certain death" otherwise. He framed the campaign as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, destroy its missile arsenal, degrade proxy networks, and eliminate naval threats, while explicitly calling for regime change by encouraging Iranians to "take over your government."

In response, Iranian national security official Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, confirmed Tehran's refusal to negotiate with the United States. "We will not negotiate with the United States," Larijani stated in a public post, emphasizing that time for talks had ended and that Iran would press forward with strikes until significant pain was inflicted on adversaries in Tel Aviv and Washington. He asserted that no external pressure, including threats to leadership, would force Iran to yield, vowing an unprecedented fight to avenge Khamenei's killing.

The conflict, now in its third day, has expanded beyond Iran to involve allied militias and multiple countries. On Sunday, February 28, and continuing into Monday, March 2, US and Israeli forces conducted over 2,000 strikes on Iranian targets, focusing on air defenses, command structures, missile production, and naval assets. Iranian state media and the Red Crescent reported at least 555 deaths from these attacks, including civilian casualties, with strikes hitting sites near populated areas and reportedly affecting an elementary school in one instance.

Iran retaliated swiftly, launching ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, US military bases, and targets in Gulf Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Reports indicate impacts on Israeli territory and US facilities in the region.

The violence broadened dramatically early Monday when Hezbollah, Iran's key ally in Lebanon, fired missiles and drones toward Israel—specifically targeting a military base south of Haifa—in direct response to Khamenei's assassination and ongoing Israeli actions. Israel's military responded with intensive airstrikes on Hezbollah positions, including in Beirut's southern suburbs (Dahiyeh) and southern Lebanon. Lebanon's Health Ministry reported at least 31 people killed and 149 injured in the Beirut strikes, which targeted weapons storage, launch sites, and missile infrastructure.

Adding to the chaos, a US fighter jet crashed over Kuwait near an American military base early Monday morning. The cause remains unclear, with possibilities including an Iranian missile strike, accidental friendly fire from US air defenses, or a technical malfunction. No official confirmation has been provided on casualties or the exact circumstances.

Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei's death on March 1, 2026, following Israeli missile strikes on his compound in Tehran on February 28. The 86-year-old leader, who had ruled since 1989, was killed along with family members and key advisers in what Israeli officials described as a decapitation operation using precise intelligence. Iran declared 40 days of national mourning and a seven-day holiday, while a senior Shiite cleric issued calls for jihad against the US and Israel in retaliation.

President Trump has indicated the campaign could extend for weeks, stating the US has the capability for prolonged operations and hinting at further intensification. "Whatever the time is, it’s OK, whatever it takes," he remarked, projecting an initial four-to-five-week timeline but emphasizing readiness for longer engagement. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the strikes as "surgical, overwhelming, and unapologetic," while Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine warned of expected additional US losses in what he termed "major combat operations."

The crisis traces back to failed nuclear negotiations in 2025–2026, where Iran rejected US demands for dismantling its enrichment program and curbing missile development. Tensions escalated after domestic unrest in Iran, US threats tied to protest crackdowns, and a June 2025 US strike on nuclear sites that Trump claimed "obliterated" the program—claims later disputed.

Regional actors have expressed alarm over the potential for wider instability, with oil and gas facilities disrupted and global markets reacting to supply risks. The conflict has drawn sharp international reactions, with some nations urging de-escalation while others condemn or support the military actions.

As strikes continue and proxies like Hezbollah engage directly, the Middle East faces heightened risks of a prolonged multi-front war. Iranian officials maintain defiance, rejecting any capitulation, while US and Israeli leaders assert the operations will persist until strategic objectives are met. The coming days are expected to see further military developments amid urgent diplomatic calls to prevent a broader catastrophe.
