The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed it destroyed a Boeing E3 Sentry surveillance aircraft belonging to the United States Air Force in a retaliatory strike on a US-operated military installation in Saudi Arabia.
“In response to the hostile actions of the terrorist US army…, the IRGC Aerospace Force, in a joint missile and drone operation, managed to completely destroy an E3 aircraft, better known as Airborne Early Warning and Central System (AWACS), with airborne reconnaissance, command and control capabilities,” the IRGC Public Relations Department said in a statement.
According to the statement, the Iranian operation not only destroyed the surveillance aircraft but also inflicted significant damage on nearby planes at the base. Images circulating on social media purportedly show the wreckage of the Boeing E3 Sentry, which had been deployed from Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. The photographs depict damage to the aircraft’s tail section, where the sensitive and costly AN/APY-2 reconnaissance radar is installed.
The IRGC operation follows a series of escalating retaliatory strikes across the region. On Saturday, Iranian forces reportedly destroyed a warehouse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, storing Ukrainian anti-drone systems in a hybrid missile and drone operation conducted by the IRGC Aerospace Force and Navy. Iranian officials noted that 21 Ukrainians were present at the site, but their fate remains unknown.
The latest attack comes amid a broader regional conflict that erupted after the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran on February 28. The campaign reportedly included the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military commanders, despite ongoing indirect negotiations over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
In retaliation, Iranian armed forces have carried out sustained missile and drone operations targeting US interests across West Asia, including bases in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries, as well as Israeli positions in the occupied territories. These operations have caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to commercial and civilian activities in the region.
The IRGC’s claim of destroying an AWACS aircraft represents a significant escalation in the conflict, as the Boeing E3 Sentry plays a critical role in airborne surveillance, command, and control operations. Analysts warn that the destruction of such strategic assets could further heighten tensions between Tehran, Washington, and their regional allies, increasing the risk of wider military confrontation.
While independent verification of the IRGC’s claims is pending, the incident highlights the growing sophistication of Iranian missile and drone capabilities, particularly in coordinated strikes targeting high-value military assets.
Regional observers caution that the current cycle of strikes and counter-strikes, involving both conventional and high-tech systems, could destabilize key military and economic infrastructure across the Middle East, with potential global implications for trade, energy, and security.
The destruction of the E3 Sentry underscores the increasing intensity of the US-Iran-Israel confrontation and demonstrates Tehran’s willingness to escalate operations in direct response to US and Israeli actions. With hostilities continuing, the region faces an uncertain security environment, raising international concern over potential further escalation.
