No Northerner Should Contest Presidency in 2027, Says Adamawa Governor Fintiri

Yola, March 3, 2026 – In a bold declaration that has stirred Nigeria's political landscape, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has stated that no politician from the northern region should contest the presidency in the 2027 general elections. Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), argued that the South must be allowed to complete an eight-year tenure to uphold the principles of power rotation, fairness, and national unity. His comments come amid growing speculation about potential candidates for the 2027 polls and have been interpreted as a direct challenge to northern aspirants, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who hails from the same state.

Fintiri made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television's "Sunrise Daily" program on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. "Nobody in the North has business to contest for the presidency at the moment. It is the South’s turn; they should complete their eight years if we are really serious about this country and leadership," he said. Emphasizing the need for rotational leadership to foster national cohesion, Fintiri added, "It is still, whether you like to hear it or not, there is no business of anybody in the North to do with the presidency at the moment. It is the turn of the South. They should complete their eight years. If we are really serious about this country and that we are serious about leadership, then it should rotate, so that we will all be our brothers’ keepers." He further noted that respecting zoning arrangements would reinforce unity and strengthen Nigeria's democratic culture.

The governor's stance aligns with an unwritten but widely acknowledged power-sharing formula in Nigerian politics, where the presidency alternates between the North and South every eight years to balance regional interests. President Bola Tinubu, from the southwestern state of Lagos, assumed office in 2023 following Muhammadu Buhari's eight-year term from the North. Fintiri's call for the South to complete its cycle echoes sentiments from previous election cycles, where power rotation played a pivotal role in candidate selection and voter mobilization. Analysts suggest this could bolster Tinubu's potential re-election bid, as it discourages northern challengers and consolidates support within the APC.

Fintiri's defection to the APC in February 2026 has been a significant factor in his evolving political narrative. He announced the switch last week, citing the need for national stability and development in Adamawa State. During the interview, he explained that his move was influenced by the lack of credible presidential aspirants emerging from the PDP. "But who is that person who has come out to say he wants to contest for the presidential election in the PDP? I have not seen — we have not seen any for now. So, where are we playing the opposition? If I move for the stability of this country, we still believe we should play our part to keep this country as one indivisible nation," Fintiri stated. He described himself as a central figure in the PDP but emphasized that he could not "jeopardize my political future with rumors of people who want to contest. They should have made it clear much earlier."

The defection included members of his cabinet and other PDP officials in Adamawa, marking a blow to the opposition party's influence in the North-East. Fintiri, who was re-elected in 2023 under the PDP banner, has been praised for infrastructure projects in Adamawa, including road networks, healthcare improvements, and education reforms. His shift to the APC is seen by some as a strategic alignment with the federal government to secure more resources for his state, amid economic challenges like inflation and insecurity.

The statement has particular implications for Atiku Abubakar, a perennial presidential contender and Fintiri's fellow Adamawa indigene. Atiku, who contested the 2023 election on the PDP ticket and lost to Tinubu, has been rumored to be eyeing another run in 2027, possibly under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after leaving the PDP. When asked if his position undermines Atiku's ambitions, Fintiri declined to engage directly, saying, "Well, I don’t want to join issues. I said PDP. So it is for you to analyse and ask those you are referring to if they are really in PDP." However, he affirmed that their relationship remains cordial: "I still have. There is nothing that has gone bad. It is just that everybody has taken his political ways. I am today in APC, they are in another party."

Atiku has not directly responded to Fintiri's comments on the 2027 presidency but has criticized the governor's defection as a result of "pressure and intimidation" from the ruling party. Through his Special Adviser on Media, Mazi Paul Ibe, Atiku described such defections as evidence of systemic bullying rather than genuine popularity: "Atiku said political cross-carpeting must not be confused with popularity. Governors may defect for personal survival." He accused the Tinubu administration of weaponizing state institutions to coerce opponents, warning that this could lead to a one-party state. The presidency, in turn, has used Fintiri's defection to taunt Atiku, with spokesperson Bayo Onanuga suggesting he "retire from politics and return to his second home in Dubai," arguing that losing influence in Adamawa weakens his national appeal.

Reactions on social media and from political commentators have been mixed. Several news outlets amplified Fintiri's statement, with posts garnering significant attention. Some users praised the governor for promoting equity, while others accused him of betraying northern interests or succumbing to APC inducements. Political analyst Dr. Umar Ardo, a former gubernatorial contender in Adamawa, criticized the defection as "self-preservation disconnected from the aspirations of the people."

The broader context of Fintiri's remarks highlights the fragile state of opposition politics in Nigeria. With the PDP fragmented and other parties like the Labour Party and ADC struggling for cohesion, the APC appears to be consolidating power ahead of 2027. Fintiri's endorsement of southern continuity could discourage northern PDP figures from mounting challenges, potentially paving the way for a less contested re-election for Tinubu. However, critics argue that rigid zoning undermines merit-based leadership and could exacerbate regional tensions if not managed carefully.

As Nigeria grapples with economic hardships, including rising food prices and fuel costs, Fintiri urged focus on governance over politicking. "The stability of this nation matters in the politics of the nation," he said. Political observers will be watching closely to see if other northern governors echo his sentiments or if this sparks a backlash within the region. For now, Fintiri's words have injected fresh debate into the 2027 discourse, underscoring the enduring role of regional balance in Nigerian democracy.
