Oginibo Community Hails NDDC Over Swift Approval of Streetlight Project

Residents of Oginibo Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State have commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the swift approval of a solar-powered streetlight project aimed at enhancing security and boosting economic activities in the area.

The commendation was contained in a statement issued by the community on Monday, which described the intervention as timely, impactful, and highly commendable.

According to the statement, the community had formally written to the NDDC on February 9, 2026, requesting the provision of 985 solar-powered streetlights to address prolonged darkness and its associated security and socio-economic challenges.

The letter, jointly signed by the President-General, Mr. Israel Orioborue Opheghe, and the Secretary-General, Mr. Tisha Ejekanshe Matthew, highlighted the absence of functional street lighting in the community for several years.

It noted that the situation had exposed residents to security risks, limited night-time movement, and hindered commercial activities.

The community expressed delight that within barely one month of submitting its request, the NDDC approved the project and confirmed that the contract had already been awarded. It described the development as “remarkable” and indicative of a more responsive and result-driven Commission.

The project involves the emergency installation of solar-powered streetlights across Oginibo and its environs at a total cost of ₦298 million, inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT).

Community leaders noted that the Commission’s prompt response reflects a renewed commitment to addressing the developmental needs of communities in the Niger Delta region.

“This uncommon promptness is a clear testament to the emergence of a result-oriented Commission committed to meeting the needs of the people,” the statement said.

The community also lauded the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for repositioning the agency into a proactive and accountable institution focused on delivering measurable results.

It expressed optimism that the installation of the streetlights would significantly improve security, enhance safer movement at night especially for vulnerable groups and stimulate economic and social activities within the community.

The statement further acknowledged the role of the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, for facilitating engagement between the community and the NDDC.

Reaffirming its readiness to support the implementation process, the Oginibo Community pledged continued cooperation with the Commission to ensure the successful execution and sustainability of the project.

The community added that the intervention aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing appreciation for the initiative while reaffirming its support for both the President and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the President-General, Mr. Opheghe Orioborue Israel, described the approval as “a timely and impactful intervention that reflects a new dawn in the operations of the NDDC,” adding that the community remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote development and security.

The statement concluded with a resounding appreciation to the NDDC for restoring public confidence in its mandate through what it described as a people-oriented and responsive intervention.
