Dutse, Jigawa State, March 22, 2026 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched fresh measures aimed at reducing the economic pressure on Nigerians following the recent increase in fuel prices, a development that has intensified public complaints over the rising cost of living.
The announcement was highlighted during Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, where Governor Umar Namadi addressed residents after hosting the Emir of Dutse and other traditional rulers at the Hawan Bariki Durbar on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by Namadi’s Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Muhammad Gumel, the governor said President Tinubu is “deeply concerned” about the situation and that steps are already being rolled out to mitigate the impact, particularly in the transportation sector.
“The President is aware of the burden this increase will place on our people and has already begun taking measures to reduce the impact, especially in the area of transportation,” Namadi said.
He explained that the recent spike in petrol prices has been compounded by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted global oil supply and led to higher international oil prices. The effect, he noted, has been a sharp rise in transport fares and the cost of goods and services, placing additional strain on households and businesses across Nigeria.
As part of the federal government’s response, Namadi revealed that initiatives are being developed to introduce alternatives that will reduce the cost of movement for Nigerians. He noted that the recent surge in transport fares has made commuting increasingly difficult for workers, traders, and other daily commuters.
“The federal government is not ignoring the situation,” he emphasized, adding that directives have been issued to relevant agencies to implement relief measures without delay.
At the state level, Namadi assured that the Jigawa government will complement federal efforts through its own policies and intervention programs. These initiatives, he said, will focus on reducing the economic strain on residents and improving access to basic necessities.
While acknowledging that the current situation remains challenging for many households, the governor expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between the federal and state governments will gradually restore stability and ease the cost-of-living pressures.
Across the country, Nigerians have continued to express frustration over rising fuel prices. Analysts say the increase has triggered a chain reaction, affecting food prices, transportation, and other essential services, leaving many households struggling to meet daily needs.
The president’s intervention comes at a time when citizens are calling for swift actions to protect vulnerable populations and maintain economic stability. With both federal and state governments now actively coordinating relief measures, officials hope to ensure that the impact of the fuel price surge is contained while alternatives for affordable transportation are implemented.
