Russia and Vietnam on Monday signed an intergovernmental agreement to cooperate on the construction of Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant.
The signing ceremony was held in Moscow following high-level talks between Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh.
The agreement was formalized by Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, and Tran Van Son, head of the Vietnamese Government Office.
During discussions with Pham Minh Chinh, Mishustin said the nuclear project would serve as a major catalyst for collaboration in related fields, including high technology, fundamental research, and applied scientific projects.
Mishustin also highlighted that ongoing agreements between Russian and Vietnamese companies in the oil and gas sector would facilitate joint development of energy resources in both nations.
The Russian prime minister further proposed continued efforts to expand bilateral trade, signaling a broader push to strengthen economic and technological ties between Moscow and Hanoi.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in Vietnam’s energy sector, as the country aims to diversify its energy mix and leverage nuclear technology for long-term sustainable growth.
