The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South geopolitical zone has successfully elected a new Zonal Executive Committee, signaling renewed commitment to unity and strategic preparation ahead of the 2027 general elections. The congress, which took place on Wednesday in Asaba, Delta State, drew top party leaders, including the President of the Senate, governors, lawmakers, and delegates from across the region, reflecting the APC’s growing organizational cohesion in the South-South.
Proceedings commenced with a motion for the dissolution of the outgoing Zonal Executive Committee. The motion, moved by Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, and seconded by Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, was unanimously adopted by all delegates, marking a smooth transition of leadership.
Following the dissolution, delegates unanimously adopted a consensus-based approach for electing the new officers. The motion for consensus was moved by Senator Essien Williams of Cross River State and seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey of Akwa Ibom North East. The adoption of consensus as the mode of election underscored the party’s determination to minimize internal conflicts and strengthen collective ownership of leadership within the zone.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Chief Victor Giadom was elected as National Vice Chairman (South-South), with other key officers including Dr. Ita Udosen as Zonal Secretary, Barr. Neworld Safugha as Legal Adviser, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike as Publicity Secretary, Prince Urhoro Koyoyo as Youth Leader, Hon. Suobankuo Omoni as Women Leader, Hon. Prince Edward as Organising Secretary, and Prince Ayo Peter as representative of Persons with Disabilities.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending the South-South APC for its growing unity and political consolidation. Akpabio highlighted the remarkable transformation of the region, noting that it had evolved from having minimal APC presence to becoming a strong political bloc with enhanced alignment from governors, legislators, and stakeholders.
He challenged party faithful to ensure that the South-South becomes the highest vote-delivering region for the APC in the 2027 elections, stressing that achieving this goal is both feasible and critical to the party’s national ambitions.
The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in his goodwill message, welcomed delegates to Asaba and described the congress as a powerful demonstration of the party’s strength, unity, and readiness for future political engagements. Oborevwori emphasized the importance of sustained grassroots mobilization, urging party members to deepen internal cohesion, strengthen structures at all levels, and maintain strong connections with the electorate.
The Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the adoption of consensus is a major step toward reducing internal conflicts and fostering collective ownership within the party. He observed that, for the first time in recent political history, the South-South was speaking with one voice, noting that the full attendance of governors at the congress underscored their shared commitment to the region’s development and political progress.
Other governors, including Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), reiterated the importance of regional alignment with the federal government. They emphasized that strong collaboration between state leadership and the central government is key to advancing the APC’s agenda and delivering tangible benefits to citizens.
During the welcome address, Chief Victor Giadom expressed gratitude to party leaders and stakeholders for their support throughout his tenure. He highlighted the progress achieved by the APC in the South-South, including increased electoral victories and greater political alignment across the zone. Giadom’s reelection was greeted with widespread applause, reflecting confidence in his leadership and vision for the region.
In his acceptance speech, Giadom expressed optimism about the party’s trajectory in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He promised to work tirelessly to expand the APC’s influence in the zone, strengthen grassroots networks, and position the party for even greater success in upcoming contests.
The congress was attended by a broad cross-section of political actors, including members of the National and State Houses of Assembly, ministers, senior government officials, party leaders, and stakeholders from across the South-South.
