Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly launched a deadly assault on a Nigerian Army outpost in Monguno, Borno State, resulting in the death of at least 22 soldiers, according to multiple security sources familiar with the incident.
The overnight attack was said to have targeted a forward military position as troops were allegedly preparing for a renewed offensive against insurgent groups operating in the region. The assault is the latest in a series of intensified attacks on security formations in northeastern Nigeria, where a long-running insurgency has persisted for over 17 years.
The affected unit was reportedly attached to the 242 Battalion operating in Borno State, an area widely regarded as one of the epicentres of the conflict involving Boko Haram and other extremist factions. Among those feared killed was a senior officer identified as Colonel I.A. Muhammad, who was said to have been leading troops stationed at the outpost.
According to sources, Colonel Muhammad is among at least six senior officers reportedly killed by Boko Haram fighters within the past two weeks, underscoring what security analysts describe as a worrying escalation in attacks targeting high-ranking military personnel.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports suggest that the attackers stormed the military position under the cover of darkness, engaging troops in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The intensity of the confrontation reportedly overwhelmed the stationed soldiers, leading to heavy casualties on the side of the military.
Following the incident, a video purportedly showing the aftermath of the attack began circulating on social media platforms, although its authenticity has not been independently verified. The footage allegedly depicts damaged military equipment and scenes of destruction at the outpost.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement confirming the details of the attack or the reported casualties. A spokesperson for the Army did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking clarification on the incident.
The Monguno axis has long remained a strategic and volatile corridor in the fight against insurgency in the North-East, frequently witnessing clashes between government forces and Boko Haram fighters. Despite repeated military operations and territorial recoveries announced in previous years, the region continues to experience periodic attacks and ambushes.
Security experts note that the resurgence of coordinated assaults on military formations raises concerns about the operational capabilities of insurgent groups, as well as potential gaps in intelligence and battlefield preparedness.
The latest incident also comes amid renewed assurances from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that his administration would intensify military operations to defeat insurgency and restore lasting peace to affected regions. The president has consistently pledged support for the armed forces in their efforts to contain extremist violence across the North-East.
The 2009 uprising by Boko Haram has since evolved into one of Africa’s most protracted security crises, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of civilians across Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Despite multiple counterinsurgency campaigns, the group and its splinter factions have continued to carry out sporadic but deadly attacks on both civilian and military targets.
Authorities are expected to release an official briefing as investigations into the Monguno attack continue, while military reinforcements are likely to be deployed to the area to prevent further incursions.
For now, the incident adds to growing concerns over the persistence of insecurity in Borno State and highlights the continuing risks faced by Nigerian troops stationed in frontline combat zones.
