The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday led a high-level delegation of security agency heads to Jos, Plateau State, to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the escalating security situation in the area.
Shaibu’s visit comes just 24 hours after a violent outbreak in Jos North Local Government Area, which reportedly resulted in multiple civilian deaths and the burning of churches and buildings, highlighting the urgency of restoring order.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief’s visit forms part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the region, protect lives and property, and entrench lasting peace across Plateau State.
Upon arrival, Shaibu was received by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, reflecting strong civil-military cooperation and a shared commitment to tackling the security challenges in the state.
The Army Chief also received a detailed operational briefing from the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Folusho Oyinlola. The briefing highlighted ongoing military operations and proactive measures being implemented in coordination with other security agencies to contain threats and stabilize affected communities.
Colonel Anele emphasized that Shaibu’s engagement extended beyond military officials, as the COAS also met with community leaders and residents. During these interactions, he reassured the public of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting all law-abiding citizens and urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of security efforts by complying with curfews and cooperating with ongoing investigations.
Local officials welcomed Shaibu’s intervention. Dachung Bagos, Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area, commended the Army Chief for his timely visit, stating that the presence of the COAS would bolster public confidence and reinforce trust in the security operations.
Similarly, Ladi Dangyok, Councillor representing Naraguta ‘B’ Ward, expressed gratitude for the swift military response. Dangyok described the visit as a strong reassurance to communities affected by the violence and a demonstration of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.
The visit underscores the Nigerian Army’s proactive stance in responding to emerging security threats in Plateau State and its collaborative approach with local authorities and community stakeholders. It also signals a commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring that civilians feel protected amid escalating tensions.
