Donald Trump said Tuesday that King Charles III shares his position that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Trump made the remarks during a state dinner held in honor of King Charles and Queen Camilla, where he touched on tensions in the Middle East and ongoing U.S. military operations in the region.
According to Trump, his administration is currently engaged in what he described as “a little Middle East work,” adding that the situation was progressing very well.
He further claimed that Iran had been militarily defeated, though he did not provide specific details or evidence to support the assertion.
Reaffirming his administration’s hardline stance on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, Trump said the United States would never allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons capability.
He then added that King Charles agreed with that view even more strongly than he did.
The remarks came against the backdrop of heightened tensions following the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive launched against Iran on February 28.
That military action triggered retaliatory strikes by Tehran on what it described as U.S. interests across the region, including targets in Gulf countries.
A ceasefire was later announced on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan, followed by talks hosted in Islamabad on April 11 and 12.
Those negotiations ended without a final agreement, although Trump later said the truce had been extended at Pakistan’s request pending a proposal from Iran.
At the dinner, Trump shifted from geopolitical issues to praise for the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.
He described it as a friendship unlike any other on Earth and said the two nations share an eternal bond rooted in common sacrifice and historic cooperation.
Trump also congratulated King Charles on what he called a fantastic speech before Congress.
In a light-hearted remark, he joked that the British monarch had succeeded in getting Democrats to stand in applause, something he said he had never been able to achieve.
He added that lawmakers appeared to like the King more than they had liked any Republican or Democrat.
King Charles, speaking in response, reflected on the deep historical relationship between Britain and the United States.
He said both nations had stood together through the best and worst of times, emphasizing resilience through war, crisis, and international challenges.
The King also reaffirmed support for NATO and AUKUS, describing both partnerships as vital to addressing an increasingly complex world.
He said freedom was once again under attack, in an apparent reference to Russia’s continuing war against Ukraine.
According to Charles, modern security partnerships help ensure democratic nations can meet evolving global threats together.
The King also presented Trump with a ceremonial gift linked to wartime naval history.
He referred to a vessel he said had connections to both nations’ military efforts during the Second World War and identified it as HMS Trump.
Charles said he was presenting the original bell from the vessel’s conning tower as a personal gift to the U.S. president.
He described the item as a symbol of shared history and future friendship between the two countries.
The monarch also introduced humor into the evening by referencing Trump’s earlier comments on European history.
Trump had previously suggested that without the United States, European countries would be speaking German.
In response, Charles joked that if not for Britain, Americans might be speaking French.
The exchange drew attention as a blend of diplomacy, symbolism, and personal rapport during a visit aimed at reinforcing transatlantic ties.
The state dinner marked one of the most prominent moments of King Charles’s visit to Washington and highlighted the continued political and ceremonial importance of the U.S.-UK relationship.
It also demonstrated how international diplomacy can mix serious security discussions with softer gestures of alliance and shared heritage.
With ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, both leaders used the occasion to project unity on major global challenges while celebrating one of the world’s oldest strategic partnerships.
