The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the election of Bala Mohammed as its new National Chairman, following the resignation and subsequent political realignment of the party’s former acting chairman, Ajuji Ahmed.
The announcement was contained in an official statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, who confirmed that Mohammed, a former National Organising Secretary of the NNPP, emerged as the new leader of the party after internal consultations and leadership restructuring at the national level.
According to the statement, Ajuji Ahmed, who had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2024, recently left the NNPP to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a development that created a leadership vacuum within the party’s national executive structure and necessitated the appointment of a new chairman.
With the transition, Bala Mohammed, described by the party as an experienced administrator and long-standing member of the NNPP, has now been entrusted with the responsibility of steering the party’s affairs at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The party described the new national chairman as an “astute administrator” from Kaduna State, noting that his background in party organisation and political coordination positioned him well for the task ahead. The NNPP expressed confidence that he would bring “tactical brilliance, organisational strength, and unwavering commitment to grassroots mobilisation” to his new role.
In its statement, the NNPP also used the occasion to raise broader concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, alleging that recent developments in the political space reflect growing pressure on opposition parties and democratic institutions.
Johnson, speaking on behalf of the party, said the country is currently facing significant governance and socio-economic challenges, including widespread hardship, insecurity, and rising inflation, which he said have placed citizens under severe strain.
He further alleged that there are ongoing attempts to destabilise opposition parties through internal divisions and coordinated political interference. According to him, the NNPP has been subjected to what he described as “sponsored internal crises” aimed at weakening its structure and discouraging its members.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” Johnson said in the statement. “Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man.”
Despite these claims, the party maintained that it remains resilient and focused on its long-term political objectives. It expressed optimism that the appointment of Bala Mohammed as national chairman would strengthen internal unity and reposition the NNPP for greater political relevance ahead of future elections.
The NNPP emphasized that its ideology remains rooted in grassroots politics, social inclusion, and advocacy for the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. It said the new leadership would continue to promote these values while working to expand the party’s national reach.
Political observers note that the leadership change comes at a sensitive time for opposition parties in Nigeria, as political alignments continue to shift ahead of future electoral cycles. The movement of key figures between parties, including defections such as that of Ajuji Ahmed to the ADC, has further intensified discussions about party stability and ideological consistency within the country’s multiparty system.
The NNPP, which gained national attention in recent election cycles, has positioned itself as a platform focused on reform, youth engagement, and grassroots empowerment. However, like many political parties in Nigeria, it has also faced internal disagreements and restructuring challenges as it seeks to consolidate its influence.
With Bala Mohammed now at the helm, attention will turn to how effectively the party can manage internal cohesion, address allegations of external interference, and strengthen its organisational structure across the country.
For now, the NNPP insists it remains committed to democratic principles and determined to play an active role in shaping Nigeria’s political future, despite what it describes as ongoing pressures on opposition voices in the country.
